Calpol - wrong age

Jokat · 28/09/2019 16:11

I have accidentally bought Calpol that is meant for ages 3 months to 6 years. My dd is 10! Do you think it would be safe to give her maybe 15ml, considering 5ml is right for 6-24 months, 7.5ml is right for 2-4 years and 10ml for 4-6 years?
I'd like to not waste the bottle...

dosage instructions should be on the bottle, even for older dc.

www.nhs.uk/medicines/paracetamol-for-children/

scroll a bit down for dosage.

minisoksmakehardwork · 28/09/2019 16:20

The plus six stuff claims to have more than twice the strength of infant calpol. 6plus dose would be 7.5ml so I'd think you'd be fine with doubling the infant so as not to waste it.

Although I also thought it had older dosage on the side too. Maybe they've changed it with the introduction of 6plus.

Is it unopened? They may exchange it for you.

Wannabegreenfingers · 28/09/2019 16:27

It's fine. The dosage will be on the bottle.

Jokat · 28/09/2019 16:27

Nope it only states dosage up to 4-6 years. I just checked the leaflet as well, and that's the same, plus it says for children over 6 years ask a pharmacist to recommend a suitable product.
I didn't know about the 6+ stuff having more than twice the strength of the infant version, that's good to know.
Thank you all.

It's what my mother always did as I hated the orange older child's flavour! I'm fine!

MustardScreams · 28/09/2019 16:37

Just look at how much paracetamol is per ml of each one and calculate accordingly. It should say it on the ingredients list on the bottle.

IwillrunIwillfly · 28/09/2019 17:15

The dose for a 10yr old is 500mg. The under 6 strength is 120mg in 5 mls so for 500mg you should give her 20.8mls (for simplicity sake 20mls I'm sure would do the trick!)

Jokat · 28/09/2019 21:22

Thank you so much, that's brilliant!!

You just double it. I always used to give DS1 half a dose of six plus when he was younger because it was so hard to get medicine into him.

BertieBotts · 28/09/2019 21:25

Also for a 10yo unless she's very underweight you can give one adult paracetamol tablet, as they are usually 500mg. DS1 sometimes prefers this as he crushes it and takes it in yoghurt.
