Accidental ibuprofen overdose

My DD, 3yrs 9 months, is ill with a fever atm. I gave her a 3rd 5ml dose of Neurofen of the day then about 40 minutes later my husband gave her another, not realising that I'd already done it. So she's had 20ml today. Do I need to take her to hospital? The internet reckons she'll be fine but I'm worried.

I think she’ll be perfectly fine but absolutely call NHS24 for advice to put your mind at ease if you feel you need to.

I would phone and check, but I'd reckon she'd be fine.
I once accidentally picked up a packet of double strength ibuprofen and took them for about a week thinking they were single strength. I did think they were making me extra dopey, but put it down to the general cold symptoms.
When I found out I checked with the Dr and they laughed and said I'd be fine.

I did this once.. I called 111 and they said it would be OK with burden.. Just no. More for 24 hours
If it was paracetamol it would be a different story
But that was a long time ago so advice may have changed so I would check

A&E doc here. She’ll be fine. Don’t give any more til the morning.

stucknoue · 13/09/2019 19:37

You can actually double the dose in some circumstances so one double should be fine, just no more for 8 hours. Paracetamol is dangerous though so work out a system for the future

CountFosco · 13/09/2019 19:37

It will depend on how much she weighs as much as her age but the maximum they say on the packet is always less than the actual maximum so there's some leeway for accidental overdosing so you could call 111 but don't worry too much.

Thanks everyone. I called just to put my mind at rest and they weren't too worried. Just don't give her any more for a good while! She's probably about the size of some 4 year olds and she's had below the amount they're allowed in 24 hours.
