Delayed heat stroke??

Can you seem ok but then develop heat stroke the next day???

DS(7) went on a bike ride yesterday and was hot but happy when he got back. Lots of water fights etc in the garden, plenty of time in the shade and lots of water. Ate a good dinner, had a cool shower and went to bed happy as Larry.

Complained of ear ache overnight and was a bit hot but dose of calpol sorted him out.

He was at a club today (indoors) and they phoned me to collect him after 2 hours and he was boiling hot asleep and is still very hot now even after a cold flannel, another dose of calpol and lying quietly in our coolest room.

What would you do?

Sorry should say temp was 38.2 before calpol / flannel / drinks and is now at 37.5

If temp has come down I’d just watch and wait. It could be an ear infection brewing. If calpol doesn’t bring temp down as it has done then I’d phone gp for advice. Hope lo is better soon .

I'd say an ear infection too and unrelated to sun. Could be bacterial one and require antibiotics so you'd need to see gp to figure that out.

I suggest feel his pulse, count how fast he is breathing at rest (observe don't tell him) He's 7 right? Then his observations should be;
Heart rate: 80-120 beast per min
Resp rate: 20-25 per min

Is he shaking - uncontrolled wither fever (Rigors).

Is he just complaining of ear pain? Does it look infected?

Push fluid in any case and keep an eye on his wee make sure it's not brown or dark and smelly, or pain when peeing.

Hope it helps x

How is your ds today op?

FusionChefGeoff · 02/09/2019 22:00

Just in case anyone finds this in search, turned out it was a bug as after 3 days of poorly / rest / recovery his sister came down with the same thing!! Both fine now and calpol / fluids / ibuprofen managed symptoms.
