Diarrhea for 3 weeks

Hi, my baby is now 12 weeks. He has had diarrhea for 3 weeks, got it a week after his first injection and after his formula sma 1st went to 150ml. I went to the doctors after the first week, they advised me to give him little and often feeds so 100ml every hour n half or so if there is no improvement in a week bring in a still sample, I have done that awaiting results. Gp said it wouldn't have anything to do with his jabs. Baby was breast fed for the first 3 weeks (expressed, couldn't latch on), then went to sma 1st. Baby hasnt been swimming, I'm very particular with cleaning bottles and dummy so dont think it's a bug and surely wouldn't last this long. Thought maybe the milk but baby was on it for a while before this started. Can anyone recommend anything that this could be. I have a feeling the stool result will come back with nothing as he is healthy and happy in every other way and have read a few other posts on the same subject.
Thanks in advance for any help!

@Sunflower160 sounds like a good idea. At least u will know if it's the formula or not. Cant do any harm. Wish I did both, I used to just express but he jumped from 60 to 120 n i just couldn't keep up and he couldn't latch on so had to stop, he was very sicky when I was giving him both too. I cant believe lo hasnt had a poo today! But his farts absolutely reek so here isnto hoping it's a normal poop! Hope your lo are improving xx

@bearec2003 that’s great news, glad you’ve noticed a change. We’ve had an improvement too - it’s been over 24 hours since just having breast milk and he’s only done 3 poos today (makes a difference from 10 a day!) and they’ve been much less watery. Which tells me it was probably the formula causing it?! He was on cow and gate so I don’t know whether I should switch and which one to?! HiPP Organic is meant to be ‘gentler’ apparently

bearec2003 · 02/09/2019 20:23

@sunflower160 yay!! Glad things are on the up! Yeah sound like it could be the formula unless it's just a coincidence, but any improvement is good! I'm not sure about cow and gate, I've used sma 1st since we switched from breast but I know they do a sma comfort which is supposedly easier to digest but havent tried it myself. I was worried about switching incase it made him worse and the dr never mentioned changing it.

@bearec2003 did you switch gradually or just start using different all the time? I’m wondering if I should use a different formula straight away or if to do it gradually and still use cow and gate in the meantime but I don’t really want to do that if its cow and gate causing the problem!

Just a quick message to see how you was getting on @Sunflower160 ?

After 2 days on her new milk she is now back down to 1 poo a day! Such a relief

Sunflower160 · 06/09/2019 14:20

@Eltay hi! Went back to docs yesterday for a follow up and results of his stool sample. Everything came back clear. I have changed him from cow and gate to hipp organic and he’s much better. He used to poo once a day and it’s still 2-3 but looks normal again and certainly a change from the 10-12 a day that he was doing!! Thanks for asking. Glad your LO is back to normal. What milk is it? X

bearec2003 · 06/09/2019 21:09

@Eltay @Sunflower160

Sorry sunflower, must have missed the notification of the new message. I started adding in a couple of formula a day and just slowly increased it.

So glad both your little ones are on the mend. Still getting 1 poop a day here. Still runny but so much better then before!!

@Eltay @bearec2003 @Sunflower160 @orangeicecream

Hey mums. I know this thread’s old, sorry to bring it back to life but it sounds like were going through something very similar.

Im a daddy to a 6 month old who suddenly developed diarrhea nearly two weeks ago. Its been pretty constant and she’d have three or four green watery poos during, after and in between every single feed.

We’ve switched her to lactose free milk (2 days ago) and whilst theres been a slight improvement, she’s still having lots of watery poos of which a couple today had lots of clear jelly-like mucus in them.

We’ve sent a sample to the docs for analysis and guess we’ll have to wait for the results but just wondering if you could summarise what the outcome was for you guys?

I dont know whats worse... the actual diarrhea or the nasty raw bum it makes Sad

Any advice, greatly appreciated.

Hi @dcooke
Sorry to hear you and your lo are going through it.
I think @orangeicecream was right for us and it was a temporary thing after jabs. By the time the 2nd stool results came back he was pooping normally and we havent had any problems since. I was adamant at the time it was the milk however we kept to the same formula and even still use it now.

Sudacrem worked for us with the sore bum. I think I put so much on nothing could actually touch his skin.

Sorry I cant be anymore of a help..

Really hope your lo is better soon.

Hi @dcooke
My little girl had it for 30 days straight so I feel for you and your littlen.
For us we got put on dairy free milk which stopped it within a few days but we got the prescribed. My DD isnt Actually allergic to dairy But its what worked for her - i then slowly weaned her on lactose free milk and then normal milk

Moonshine160 · 22/05/2020 20:19

Hi @dcooke - ours lasted just over two weeks. It stopped as quickly as it started. I still don’t know what caused it - could have been a bit of a tummy bug, teething related, or something else entirely! We also had to have a stool sample sent off which turned out normal. Hope it stops soon for you!
