Worm medication for 6 month old

Hi there,

I have posted about this already but I am still freaking out so any help is so much appreciated. We had guests to stay this weekend and last night we found out the little girl has worms. They have left and I have cleaned the whole house.

I don't live in the UK and we have been prescribed the medication Mebendazole. We have been told to use it with our son who is 6 months old but this goes against all UK advice, but the doctor here (EU country), has told us it is ok?

I would love some reassurance that it is ok to give this to my son in the morning?

Thank you so much in advance for any advice.

Looking at the BNF it says it can be given to 6 month old by mouth for thread worms. If you're concerned, could you approach your doctor again?

If it were me I’m not sure I’d bother giving him any medication until I knew he definitely had them - you’ll see them in his nappy and he won’t come to any harm whilst you wait .

Yes. My son was prescribed this at 10 months for worms. I had seen the buggers crawling out of his anus at night though so I knew for sure he had them 🤢

You'd only see them in his nappy if they die; otherwise they cling on during a bowel movement and don't come out. I checked my son's bum at night as a last resort after many nights of disturbed sleep. He was squirming around shortly after I'd put him down and struggled to settle. I thought "I wonder if...", and decided to take a look with a torch. Sure enough, there they were. Once is given him the medication they started coming out in his poo.

I would probably wait to see if he actually has them, but if he does it's really okay to give the medication.
