Realistically, how long will they need to be worn for ?

It's for jaw re-alignment before moving on to normal braces. It seems like torture and I'm dishing out pain relief as apparently jaw is aching badly.

I know if child is motivated to wear them then results will be quicker but honestly what sort of timescale are we looking at ? Orthodontist was very vague when asked and said they could be more indicative when we go back for the 6-8 week review. Getting them worn diligently in the interim with no end in sight is proving mentally challenging.

Have to leave block wearer with grandparents today whilst at work and they're (GP's) not really on board with the need for the treatment so worrying that they'll be a soft touch.

Hi, my daughter wore them for 6 months before two years of braces. The pain wore off pretty quickly. Good luck x

Thanks @UAEMum

If we could be done in 6 months that would be fantastic. Today was better apparently although I may not be getting accurate info as to how long they were out for at meal times Wink.

They have to start wearing them overnight in a day or so, hoping that goes ok.

The first couple of weeks are hell, but it does get a lot better, it really does. Within a month, DD could speak a lot more easily and they didn't hurt. She only wore them during the day for five months, and then it was another five months of nights only, three months of every other night then onto the train tracks (which, if I am honest are way more of a pain in the neck).

Also, if they hurt a lot, it might be worth trying to add a bit more time each day - DD was told to gradually wear them more and more over a week or two.

And how long really does depend on some unpredictable factors - DD had a growth spurt when she had hers in, so they worked more quickly than they might have done otherwise.

I think we were about 6 months as well. The change was amazing it’s made a massive difference.

OP I can’t honestly remember but I remember fighting a loosing battle with DD. She started early and wore braces at primary. She had finished her treatment by 13 when most of her peers were just starting treatment. She started with a 12mm over bite but the difference looking back at her mouth and teeth now on old photos was worth all the hassle and pain. I think they can take calpol if they are in pain initially.
