Conjunctivitis ointment

DS 10 months has conjunctivitis in his left eye and we were prescribed ointment for it yesterday.

Nurse told us it was v likely to spread to his other eye (can't stop him from rubbing them!) and if so, to go to the GP to get ointment for his right eye.

So this morning it had spread and I'm wondering whether we can use the left-eye ointment on it, and why we have to go get another one. I realise it's probably about cross-contamination, but now that it IS in both eyes, what difference can it make?

Obviously I will take him to the GP if it's necessary but I just wonder whether it's overkill?

Any advice from those already been through this? He has a stinking cold as well so is really suffering at the moment, bless him!
