The left side of DD's heart is larger than the right and no-one knows why

The left side of my DD's heart is bigger than the right and the cardiologist doesn't know why. All he can say is that maybe this is just the way her heart is and he's speaking to his colleagues tomorrow to see if they agree she can be discharged from their care. She has a follow up appointment in 6 months which will be cancelled if they all agree. Has anyone else had anything like this? I've tried looking online but I can't find anything similar. This was picked up during pregnancy but only due to additional tests being carried out because she had a large nuchal fold. Since she's been born she's had 2 heart scans and the results have been the same. I'm sure everything is fine but after finding out about the nuchal fold and after numerous tests and visits to the hospital both during and after pregnancy we are still none the wiser as to why and I can't help but worry.

It's understandable to worry about things that seem abnormal that don't have an explanation, but actually this is a common situation in medicine. It sounds as if she has been investigated by a heart expert and discussed with several more - they are very experienced with the tests they use and the risk management about all kinds of variation and abnormality.
It's very likely that in the past people went through their entirely lives unaware of something like this.
If you need extra reassurance to keep you from continuing to worry, I recommend getting it from the experts who have seen you. Eg you could contact secretaries and ask for a copy of your letter and a plain language summary.
If you are still worried to a significant extent even though your child is completely well and has been checked out thoroughly, look into Health Anxiety - it's an under-recognised problem, and can be triggered by a finding like enlarged nuchal fold and all the attendant tests, conversations and fears. It is not something to be ashamed of.

I don't think I have health anxiety as I'm not overly worried. I think because the heart consultant didn't know why her heart was enlarged on the left side it worried me but he is checking it with his colleagues this week. I have complete faith in him, he seems really thorough and has explained everything to us well. I do realise that had we not had any issues during pregnancy then the size discrepancy would unlikely have been picked up anyway. Thanks for your response. It's good to know that it's quite common for people to have abnormalities without any explanation. It makes me feel less alone.
