Braces keep breaking..is this normal?

DD14 has been under a major teaching hospital in London for the last 2 years, she has various problems with her teeth and jaw.

Braces were fitted in April as the next stage of treatment so far they have broken 5 times, 3 brackets have broken and the wire has broken twice last time becoming embedded in her gum. The hospital aren't concerned however they have a very small timeframe that you can go to get them repaired for half hour each morning and this is proving difficult as it's half hour on the tube so we leave really early but sometimes they can't see her as they are too busy so she is missing a lot of school going backwards and forwards and this can't continue throughout Y10&11.

So what I'm really asking is has anyone else experienced this many problems and do we have to just suck it up?

No. I had braces for 3 years and they never broke

The only time my DC have broken theirs have been when they've eaten stuff they shouldn't have - carrots, crusty bread and wine gums, for example.

My son broke his 3 times in the first few weeks (peanuts! Football in face. And mystery one). Since then (6 months now) he's been fine. The wires get thicker, so they are less likely to break. Your child will have to be careful with food though. Cut everything up really small.

Thanks all.

She's really good with food so I don't think it's that just seems a lot in such a short space of time?

Dd has only had to have a bracket reattached once in 2 years of having braces

I've had a brace fitted to my lower teeth, about 4 weeks ago. It has not yet lasted a full week without breaking. I have a long drive to the dentist in Carmarthen from Milford Haven (private at £2,600, as its part of an implant process & rightly isn't on the NHS). I have been back twice to get it mended. It broke again last week and again yesterday, I will have to go back a third time next week if they can fit me in. Is this normal? Is there anything I can insist they do differently? It is driving me mad. I can't eat properly - I eat soft food, but when I eat soft bread its then it breaks as the bread compacts underneath and seems to burst it. But that could happen with any soft food caught underneath. I tried eating one mouthful at a time and rinsing, but it still broke while eating one mouthful. Any suggestions?
