Pain behind knees - 3yo

BobbieGi · 23/06/2019 10:20

Hi all,

My 3yo son often mentions pain at the back of his knees...it doesn’t make him limp or particularly grimace or grip his knees in pain, but he does mention it often enough (over the last 6 months or so) for us to have noticed that it’s a reoccurring , regular thing for him. It’s often in the morning or in the day (ie not in the night as often with growing pains apparently).

It’s hard to know with this age how big a deal it is (he says he is sick every time he needs a poo), but I am considering taking him to the doctor with it. Before I do, I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this with their LOs? I’d be grateful for any shared experience...

Thanks!

DD also at the age of 3 started mentioning pain in her legs, at the knee and hip/groin.
GP reffered to paediatrics, I think mainly due to family history of joint issues.
They ruled out anything structural but bloods shows low vit D and whether its just coincidence after starting vit D supplements she rarely says anything.
We get boots own as a lot of others only had half the recommended does, look for one that has 10 per dose or 200 in %NRV.

Worth trying as most of us tend to be low in vit D anyway.

That’s definitely worth a try, thanks @youlemming. I used to give him vit d drops, but stopped probably around his 3rd birthday. Do you still give your DD a multivitamin also, or just the d?

She was having just the vit D in a gummy bear form and she loved them as it was her favourite colour, orange, I wanted to get the multi v but she saw the orange bears first and the multi vit was red so apparently they were yukky without even trying them Grin

They have now changed the mutli vit to an orange bear as well so she thinks it's the same and happily picked them up when getting more last week.

Just to add both have the same level of vit d

My youngest dd ( 6yrs ) has often complained of the same thing but it is always followed by her being unwell - be it a cold/flu/ tummy bug etc . My husband is exactly the same whenever he feels the pain in the back of his knees he knows 100% he is coming down with something. I would definitely pay your gp a visit just to make sure it's nothing more serious though.

Haha, that’s brilliant @youlemming, she sounds like a cutie!

I’ve just checked DS multivits and they only have 50% NRV , so I’ll swap brand!

@BeTheHokeyMan ah could be this too. I’ll have to check for the pattern. I know I get quite achey joints if I’m getting a fever at any rate. Fingers crossed nothing nasty on the way.

I just get a bit anxious about these things, as there is a bit of juvenile arthritis in the family. But by all accounts this would mean a lot more pain, swelling, limping and warmth to the touch, so I don’t think it could be that. Hopefully just a bit of vit deficiency or a little virus...

How far back do his knees bend? Any signs of hypermobility?
