Persistent Red rash down there

MindfulBear · 18/06/2019 01:14

My DD is 3 and has an unexplained persistent red rash from her vulva to her anus. It looks like a burn and is clearly sore.

Has anyone else dealt with this? What would you do?

This has been a problem off and on for the last 2 years. We gave up on cloth nappies over a year ago in the hope this would help. It hasn't!

We thought it might be dairy related but I don't think she has anything except a small amount of butter if she has toast - of course I'm not in full control of what she eats nowadays so a butttery choc brownie or similar may have been consumed without me knowing. (She loves such things as well as ice cream and cheese and as it isn't a diagnosed problem other adults don't always take my concerns seriously)

DS only had 3 episodes of this in the 2 years he was in Nappies (also cloth) and each time canesten would sort it out in less than 36 hours. DD's rash is not responding in the same way at all.

I really don't know what to do to help her. She was screaming in pain yesterday when I put her in her car seat.

I suffered with thrush terribly as a child and young adult but I don't even know if this is what it is. And if it is I don't know how to prevent it...... nor seemingly how to cure it!

Any tips would be appreciated.

Do you use baby wipes or a cotton balls and water?

Alicewond · 18/06/2019 04:30

Have you spoken to your gp?

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 18/06/2019 05:05

It does sound a bit like thrush. Also interested to know if you’ve seen the GP?

My dd had/has similar and we apply canesten when it flairs up. Is your dd still in nappies (you say you gave up cloth but not if she’s toilet trained)? My dd is worse in the winter if she’s in tights a lot.

Is she still wearing nappies or potty trained (sorry if I missed that bit, on a 12 hour night shift)

My DD suffered with vulvovaginitis when she was a bit older than your DD, we were just advised to not use Any soap /bubble bath, loose cotton pants and none at bedtime. I think we had some cream but can't remember what it was from GP.

I'd take her to get seen and check it's not thrush though

Thanks for the replies.

She is not potty trained. Albeit starting to take an interest. TBH doesn't seem to matter whether she is in nappies or pants - just flares up every week or so!

I've tried taking her to the GP before but, Sod's law, rash had cleared up by the time the appointment came!!!

@lovelilies how did that get diagnosed and how long did she suffer with it?

given how red it gets & how often it flares up I've wondered if it is some kind of strep Infection

Will try the GP again.
