Does a child get so sleepy with stomach bug?

I know it's a silly question but my 3 year has a stomach bug. It really hit her hard yesterday and she went to sleep at 5pm and got up at 7.30 this morning. She had a few sips of water and threw it back up. She can't keep anything down. Then an hour later she went back to sleep and is still asleep now an hour and a half later is this normal? She's had stomach bugs before but not this bad and usually lasted a day no more and would be up and playing.

Sounds normal but keep an eye for signs of dehydration. If she becomes floppy, limp or unresponsive, seek medical attention immediately.

When shes awake next give her some thing sugary to drink, rather than just water. Even if it means dissolving sugar in some diluting juice. Give her a 5mls every 5 mins, no quicker than that.

I work with children and used to work in a nursery; you could always tell who was about to come down with a bug when they took an unusual afternoon nap. My children certainly sleep a lot with viruses - your body is fighting it I guess, and you have less energy from being off your food.

As PP said just watch out for unresponsiveness etc. and give very small amounts of liquid to limit chances of bringing it back up. My DN was hospitalised with dehydration during a severe bug; not in danger but don't be afraid to speak up if you suspect this. I think he was failing to keep stuff down over a few days though.
