I have a dilemma and could use some advice. My 13 year old dd has told me that one of her good friends at school has been cutting herself. This has been going on for quite some time but I have also noticed that the friend in question has lost a surprising amount of weight in the last month. Should I notify the school? Or her parents? I don't want to be thought to be interfering but I am worried about this poor child's health. On the other hand, I can't imagine that the school/parents haven't noticed so perhaps I should just stay out of it?

Definitely think you should speak to the parents if you are both familiar with each other. Otherwise speak to the school, the sooner these things are dealt with the more likely it is for them to get better.

You could tell the welfare officer at the school. They will have the training and experience to address it professionally.

Your daughter has told you because she is worried and wants adult help. I think you need to act.
