Toddler Ear Infection

Hi all. My DS (2) had an ear infection three weeks ago which caused his drum to burst. We went to the Dr and was given antibiotics as the fluid leaking from the ear caused impitigo all down his cheek.
We were told to come for a follow up appointment in early May to check it had sealed itself back up which is booked for the 7th.
My question is that his ear is still weeping and is that normal? It isn't really bothering him though I think it is itchy at times. It's near on impossible to keep his fingers out so I wonder if he has got some dirt in it and that is causing it to weep still or if it is to be expected until the ear has sealed itself again.
I've had a google and can't really find an answer. Anyone any experience of this?

Is the fluid clear? They can sometimes leak for quite a while, or the infection might not have cleared up yet. My sons has only just stopped leaking after bursting Xmas eve, he had to have some different medication.

Thank you for your reply @heydiddlediddle. It’s mainly clear with the occasional day of waxy looking fluid. Your poor DS I had no idea they went on this long!
