Ok so my LO is now 3 and has been on this stuff for over a year -
He is a with-holder. He had been a poop a day kid until he got a fever and had one hard poop. He told me it hurt and proceeded to with-hold for 3 days. The dr prescribed a tiny dose of lactulose which did nothing - saying he was too young to withhold and that if he was happy and eating and drinking then he would poop. Nothing by day 5 the pharmacist said the same. Day 6 i called 111 and the DR at A&E started saying all the same rubbish and then decided to check with a finger. She was visibly shocked saying it was rock hard and that he'd have never got it out on his own.
Our poor son ended up with an enema. It was horrid. I'm still angry a year later. AND no follow up treatment - no xray - no meds. I went back with him to the dr - and he was put on this COSMOLCOL stuff.
I've recently watched a specialist on autoimmune diseases say that the active chemical (POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL) can cause thinning of the stomach/bowel wall and I have also read about the many parents that say their kids changed on it. Well I'm sure our happy little guy is changing. I'm very worried.
WE have tried many things to help him poop.. giving him a phone seemed the best idea but then he just lets out little bits of poop at a time to get to see more videos.
Just recently I've noticed he has started zoning out more. Banging his head although he's never done that before and his nightmares are increasing - last night we got 5hrs sleep trying to calm him.
I know it's supposed to be safe - but has anyone noticed a correlation between the meds and weird behaviour, increased bad dreams?
Before anyone jumps on me - I am aware asking this is not very scientific !
I feel there must be an underlying cause and want the DR to do an xray and bloods to test him - I've heard that kidneys can be compromised with long term use and that liver enzymes can become elevated .
Additionally - I'm still bf and am on levothyroxine
and Thyroid disease can be a cause of constipation in kids - no one has tested him..yet.
My main frustration is that there is a list of things he may have but no one has checked
A blockage in his bowel, Encopresis, Thyroid disease, Cystic fibrosis, Celiac disease, Hirschsprung's disease to name a few.
Am i crazy to think these things should have been tested for first? Before giving CosmoCol??
Has anyone had any related experiences - we have been left with no follow up.
thanks
ps i am contacting my GP and asking for tests.
