Ear infection not cleared after antibiotics?

My 3 year old had an ear infection two weeks ago and had a course of antibiotics for this. Those finished and she’s been ok until this morning and now she’s screaming that her ear hurts again! What now? I thought a course of antibiotics would sort out the infection?

This is exactly what happened to my little girl a month ago. Took her to the GP and he gave her a week of amoxicillin for an ear and throat infection. She picked up then within a week of finishing her temp shot up again and it all just happened again. ANother GP put her on a week of cephalexin which she didn’t improve on so we ended up taking her to a&e where the paediatrician put her on a 2 week course of penicillin which cleared it and she’s been perfect ever since.

Paediatrician said loads of bacteria’s are resistant now especially to the mainstream antiobiocs and it was a pretty bad infection so just needed that extra push.

It’s horrible but just make sure she gets back in and they put her on something else so clear it up

Thank you. The out of hours doctor has put her on another course of the same antibiotic she already had! I’ll see how she goes with this course. My 5 year is also complaining her ear hurts again, she also had an ear infection just after my 3 year old. What a nightmare!

It happens, with adults too. Sometimes a second course of a different antibiotic is necessary and that does the trick.

Very worrying for you but I'm sure both will be fine soon, Flowers for you.

Oral abx were rubbish. The only thing that helped my ds was Sofradex antibiotic ear drops.
