What could be wrong with DD7?

DD1 is 7 and I’m really worried about her

She started losing weight around last summer, I thought she was just growing at first but she’s now lost so much she’s almost unrecognisable, lots of people have commented and asked what’s wrong with her
Her appetite has massively increased in that time and she now eats similar portion sizes to her Dad
Her hair has also been coming out a lot more when she washes or brushes it

I had her weighed at the doctors over a few months and she’s still actively losing weight so they’ve sent her for a blood test

After several failed attempts we finally found a lovely paediatric phlebotomist who got some blood out of her, her blood was very dark and thick and slow moving it took about 10 minutes of just sitting with it in her arm to fill 1 little bottle thing, it was so weird it was like treacle, I don’t know if that’s normal but I’ve never seen it before
Anyway that came back mostly normal except for slightly raised potassium levels, so they wanted to do another one, she had this yesterday and I’m still waiting for results

But in the mean time she’s now starting to look very pale and has got blisters? Cold sores? On her lip, she’s never had this before
I’ve also noticed things like hugs and tickles seem to hurt her now, but that’s possibly just because every single bone is sticking out now where she’s lost weight

She’s very emotional and is crying at the drop of a hat, if you ask what’s wrong she doesn’t seem to know
Her teachers have also raised concerns about her saying she’s not herself, seems quiet and tired and she’s been emotional in school, her teacher is worried about her

I just don’t know what to think, it’s been going on for so long because we were weighing her and waiting for blood tests and in the meantime she’s getting worse and worse

Has anyone any idea what it could be?
I’m so worried I just can’t stop thinking about her

I've just read up on DKA. Really scary. So glad she's doing well Sticky

TheVanguardSix · 07/03/2019 14:08

Oh bless you all, OP. I’m so glad you finally have your answers!

My friend goes to a hospital-based mindfulness group for parents of chronically ill children, mostly type 1 diabetes. It is incredibly supportive and helpful. Maybe something to consider as you all adjust to your new normal. It’s great news that you can finally help your DD back onto a healthy path!

Please get some bloods done and looked at through a company like Medichecks - sadly the NHS ‘normal’ limits for blood tests mean that lots of people with auto immune conditions are under medicated and kept sick.

It sounds like thyroid/ auto immune to me is possible here.

You can get bloods drawn for Medichecks through your local hospital - mime charge £25 and it’s booked/ paid in advance. Otherwise Medichecks have parter clinics you can attend/ someone that can come to your home. I wasted years on NHS getting sicker and now am doing better on my own

Sorry just seem the updated post!

AmIOTTconcerned · 07/03/2019 16:36

lablablab · 08/03/2019 13:51

Been thinking about u and your dd OP, hope she's doing ok Thanks

StickyShoess · 08/03/2019 21:30

Hi sorry I’ve not been able to respond the signal has been rubbish!

We’re still in hospital but she’s doing so well, she literally looks like a different child than the one I brought in, and she’s got so much energy and is bouncing around and talking my ear off again - I didn’t realise how much of her we’d lost until now that she’s coming back, it makes me so sad to think how long she’d been suffering for

She’s been absolutely amazing with it all too, she’s barely flinching when she has her injections and is taking all the information in, knows how much carbs she can have as snacks and is checking labels already!
I’m so so proud of her

I will think about making a complaint to the GP, lots of family have said we should too, if not a formal complaint through PALS then I will probably at least send an email to the practice manager and maybe suggest some more training in diabetes and use DDs case as an example of how it can be missed?

Thankyou all for the continued support you’ve all been amazing GrinFlowers

MaverickSnoopy · 10/03/2019 18:53

That's great news OP. Your DD knows how it feels to feel THAT unwell and bless her she doesn't want to feel like that again so she's taking it seriously. I can see why you feel so proud of her. What a treasure.

spaniorita · 11/03/2019 16:17

Wonderful news - I'm so pleased to hear she's doing well now!!

5thSparrow · 14/03/2019 21:29

Excellent call @theredjellybean! Your patients are lucky to have you.

Bigkingdom · 17/03/2019 10:42

I’m so glad you found out what is wrong with your daughter. I was going to suggest type 1 diabetes, esp after the bloods showed her kidneys weren’t working.
