What could be wrong with DD7?

DD1 is 7 and I’m really worried about her

She started losing weight around last summer, I thought she was just growing at first but she’s now lost so much she’s almost unrecognisable, lots of people have commented and asked what’s wrong with her
Her appetite has massively increased in that time and she now eats similar portion sizes to her Dad
Her hair has also been coming out a lot more when she washes or brushes it

I had her weighed at the doctors over a few months and she’s still actively losing weight so they’ve sent her for a blood test

After several failed attempts we finally found a lovely paediatric phlebotomist who got some blood out of her, her blood was very dark and thick and slow moving it took about 10 minutes of just sitting with it in her arm to fill 1 little bottle thing, it was so weird it was like treacle, I don’t know if that’s normal but I’ve never seen it before
Anyway that came back mostly normal except for slightly raised potassium levels, so they wanted to do another one, she had this yesterday and I’m still waiting for results

But in the mean time she’s now starting to look very pale and has got blisters? Cold sores? On her lip, she’s never had this before
I’ve also noticed things like hugs and tickles seem to hurt her now, but that’s possibly just because every single bone is sticking out now where she’s lost weight

She’s very emotional and is crying at the drop of a hat, if you ask what’s wrong she doesn’t seem to know
Her teachers have also raised concerns about her saying she’s not herself, seems quiet and tired and she’s been emotional in school, her teacher is worried about her

I just don’t know what to think, it’s been going on for so long because we were weighing her and waiting for blood tests and in the meantime she’s getting worse and worse

Has anyone any idea what it could be?
I’m so worried I just can’t stop thinking about her

Oh goodness. At least she’s in the right place now and they are taking it seriously.

Do badger then to test her cortisol levels - it could be adrenal crisis which can affect the kidneys. My friend who has Addisons Disease was only diagnosed when her kidneys stopped functioning. It may well be nothing of the sort and it purely kidney related but it’s just a little 9am blood test.

Oh my goodness. At least she is in the right place. Flowers

CoperCabana · 06/03/2019 16:02

@larrythelamb84 hope you get some answers on Friday.

ButtMuncher · 06/03/2019 16:49

Oh you poor thing and your poor daughter. I hope now she's in hospital they'll be able to get to the route of whatever is making her so poorly. Thanks

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 06/03/2019 16:58

Oh, how scary, but at least she's getting treated now. Just so shocking that it had to get to this stage.

Lots of love to you and your family

greathat · 06/03/2019 18:31

Hope she's better soon and it's something easily sorted!

EllenRipley · 06/03/2019 19:01

Think of you both OP. I hope you get some answers x

Dextrodependant · 06/03/2019 19:08

Big hugs to both of you. DS spent time on the HDU when he was diagnosed with Diabetes so I sympathise with you, it is a scary time but at least she is being looked after.

eggofmantumbi · 06/03/2019 19:09

Thinking of you both OP.

coastergirl · 06/03/2019 19:16

Just randomly reading and saw this. You must be so worried. Sending best wishes x

Lovingit81 · 06/03/2019 19:27

Best of luck OP, thinking of you Thanks

spaniorita · 06/03/2019 19:41

I don't mean to come across as at all patronising but could it be, by any chance at all, a parasite like worms??

StickyShoess · 06/03/2019 19:51

Oh thank you all for the love Smile

We’re on a ward now, it is type 1 diabetes and when we got here she had DKA so she’s been on iv fluids all day
She’s responding really well already, her blood glucose has come down massively since we’ve arrived and she’s looking much brighter already
So we’ll be staying here for a few days to get all of her levels closer to where they should be and while we learn to manage things at home - my head is spinning with information overload atm

Just wanted to thank you all so so much, even with the blood results this morning they weren’t going to test her urine or a finger prick and it’s only because of this thread that I asked them to, so if I hadn’t she could very well have been even more seriously ill - thankyou all so much
MN is bloody brilliant FlowersSmile

Wow, it’s been going on since last summer and they were still reluctant to do basic diabetes tests? The mind boggles.

Really glad you finally have answers.

StickyShoess · 06/03/2019 19:57

I know Haworthia if they’d have done it when I first took her in with all the fairly obvious symptoms we could’ve avoided a lot of this - the GP actually said to me this morning ‘oh you never mentioned you thought it was diabetes’ errrmmm you’re the doctor you should’ve told me not the other way round 🤦🏻‍♀️

So glad you’ve got some answers and DD is on the up OP! Flowers

crabb · 06/03/2019 20:01

That is absolutely shocking, Sticky Sad. So glad your DD is getting the treatment she needs finally. Good luck with the learning curve, I’m sure you’ll do a great job but it must seem like a lot to get your head around at the moment Flowers.

Cuch · 06/03/2019 20:04

Bloody hell! I can’t believe your GP missed diabetes! So many of us picked up on that really quickly right at the beginning of the thread with just a small amount of information - that is really basic stuff! Usually I have every sympathy if GPs miss things because they are over worked and it is a difficult job, but missing diabetes with pretty classic symptoms like your daughters is just ridiculous!

Anyway, I’m so glad that you have answers now and that your daughter will start to get well again with the right treatment.

AnyFucker · 06/03/2019 20:07

Sounds like you are on the right path now

Finally

TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront · 06/03/2019 20:07

Wow I'm so pleased you now have answers and that it's something that can be managed Smile great to hear she is responding well already to the treatment. Buton a side note though, I'd be making a complaint if I were you, you and your poor daughter have suffered immensely due to nothing short of plain negligence. Absolutely appalling.

bobstersmum · 06/03/2019 20:11

Brilliant that you've got answers op!

kbPOW · 06/03/2019 20:13

That's pathetic from the GP. So glad you know what's going on now and hope your DD feels much better soon.

pearldeodorant · 06/03/2019 20:23

I'm so pleased your DD is on the mend and you've finally got answers after all this time.

I would in all seriousness consider a formal complaint against the GP and possibly consider moving if there's another nearby. I find the lack of interest shown in your daughters case unforgivable and as a HCP I would struggle to move past that each time I needed to go back in the future.

That aside, what's done is done and thank goodness she's looking brighter already. Thank goodness you fought her case
