Child sick & I have severe phobia

Hi,

I’m just looking for some help & reassurance please.

My little boy was totally fine today then was suddenly sick, once, at 3pm. He’s had toast & pasta & says he feels completely fine now. He said he immediately felt better.

The problem is me, I have a really bad irrational phobia of anyone being sick & it means I’m past myself with anxiety & worry. I can’t settle & I don’t want to be around him or even at home, just in case which makes me feel like the worst mummy ever.

Is it possible for a 5 year old to just be sick once then be fine??
I know that there are so many bugs etc at this time of year & im terrified that it’s more than just a one off. Can it just be a one off?

Is anyone else’s child ever sick once just for no apparent reason?

I know it’s just sick but I literally won’t sleep tonight for worrying. It’s irrar but very real to me. If anyone else has any coping mechanisms or been through a similar thing I would love to hear how you cope.

Thank you

You have my sympathy. I am the same and it’s only now in my late 30s that I am seeking help for the phobia. It’s completely possible that he might not be sick again, but I know that won’t help right now. Do you have a partner who could help? My DH does the bulk of the work in these situations. If you have to deal with it again, it will be horrible, but you will. I find having lots of towels and bowls to hand makes me feel more in control.

Thank you, it’s nice to hear from someone who understands. I appreciate the tips too, thank you.

What kind of treatment are you trying? I’d do anything to help with this. I’m 42 & it’s getting worse, it impacts my daily life.

I’m sat shaking downstairs worrying he will get up.....despite 2 friends saying their kids were ill just the once a couple of weeks ago!

I totally sympathise I dread sick too. Its definitely possible that your child won't be sick again though! Keep it light for today and tomorrow food wise. Put a towel on his pillow and give him a bucket by his bed and tell him if he wakes and feels unwell to grab it. I've got my 5+6 year olds well trained like that now!
Hope you have a good night, can you take anything to relax you? Even a glass of wine just to take the edge off, it's horrible listening out for them isn't it.

Thank you so much for your advice.

He copes so much better than me! When he was ill earlier he managed to come in the front door, take his shoes off & go into the bathroom & put the light on! Amazing considering he has just turned 5.

I’ll try & relax, thank you

I'm the same. I found having lots of cleaning wipes and bleach handy helped, and I also bought some disposable gloves so I wouldn't get it on my hands which made me feel better about cleaning it up. I also bought machine washable pillow protectors.
Luckily, mine are older now and tend to make it to the bathroom, but I still find I treat them a bit like lepers until they've been clear for 48hrs Sad I try to pat them on the back and kiss the top of their heads and tell them I love them. They both know I'm pretty germophobic, so they know it's not personal.

Thanks, it’s hard as I don’t want him to pick up on how freaked out I am.
You do better than me! Gloves are a good idea though, I’ll certainly do that
Thank you

@Daftblondie26 I’ve had an assessment over the phone and have been referred to cbt. Hope it helps a little. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you have an uneventful night

Daftblondie26 · 17/02/2019 21:30

Thank you, I’ve just registered with talking changes tonight so I get a referral call in the next couple of days, I think it will follow a similar path to cbt. Fingers crossed for your treatment too.
Thank you.
