5 days ago my 2.5 year old daughter quite quickly developed a temperature of 39.5 our of the blue. For 3 days her temp stayed up I’ve struggled bringing it down with calpol/profen. She’s not had any other symptoms, no runny nose, cough, not tugging on her ears etc and it wasn’t letting up. Took her to the GP and they checked her out (including her urine) and said she’s all fine it’s just a virus. I’m in bed with her now she’s so tired but just keeps waking up crying clearly some kind of pain is waking her. She has said her tummy hurts when I ask her but I’m not entirely sure if she knows what she’s saying, her poo is totally normal and she’s not been sick, could she have a stomach virus and evrything else be normal with a temp which is going over 40?? The GP did say he’s surprised her temps going that high but that was it...

I’ve got two girls and have always known what was going on, this is just making me a little uneasy now... any other experiences like this or ideas? X

Mine get that whenever they're ill, sometimes with snot/ear pulling/ tummy aches etc. Sometimes unexplained and put down to a "virus"
It's hard not knowing how to help them, but cuddles and calpol is the best I've come up with

SinkGirl · 09/02/2019 15:48

I’m having the same issue here with one of my twins - started yesterday, random temp of 39.3, came down with calpol. Woke up with a temp at 1am which kept going up despite meds to 39.8 - eventually it went down. Been fine all day and woke from his nap at 39.1 - no idea what’s going on. Yesterday he was lethargic with it but now he’s completely normal and this is not how he normally responds to bugs. Very confused!

DS has just had a virus. Very high fever (up to 41), utter exhaustion and aching. No cough or cold symptoms at all. His school has been decimated by it.

Widget123 · 09/02/2019 15:54

I know that’s what’s confusing me, both my girls have always had a way of coping etc but this ones different... I know you get these weird unexplained illnesses I just don’t like how high her temp is without knowing what’s causing it, her throat and ears etc are all totally clear. Very strange. Mine keeps going really lathargic too. Fingers crossed they both pick up soon xx

Shadow how long did the temp/virus go on for?

Im really struggling as he can’t communicate at all so I have no idea if he’s feeling unwell, in pain etc

JKCR2017 · 09/02/2019 18:18

My DD has had the exact same this week. High temp Monday - Wednesday, no other major symptoms apart from being a bit lethargic and off her food a little. By Thursday she was better and I sent her to pre school Friday (yesterday). Give her a bath last night and she was covered in a red rash. Rang the out of hours who told me it was probably a viral rash and related to the temperature and nothing to worry about.

She is fine today and the rash has gone
😊 very odd!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 09/02/2019 18:30

I'm having a similar issue with DS (4) - on Thursday I had to leave work because he ran up a fever of 39.4 at nursery. By evening it was normal, next morning normal, went to gymnastics and soft play as normal, then in the evening "tired" (unusual) but no temp. Today football and meeting friends, everything normal until 4pm when he felt "hot" and now has a temperature of 39.8, but is eating normally and making a list of toys he plans to acquire in the future. He has no runny nose or cough (FOR ONCE), normal wees and poos, normal sleep, no rash.... just a weird recurring temperature. Not sure what to do except monitor him really.

Go back to the Dr if you are worried

Widget123 · 10/02/2019 15:41

She was up in the night but profen brought temp down. She had energy this morning and was back to normal but within two hours her temp was back up to 39.9 and she was on the sofa looking awful. Profen brought it down now 3 hours later it’s come back up and she’s asked to go to bed and is now fast asleep. The GP said as long as her temp is coming down with medicine there’s nothing to worry about I just need to let it run it’s course. I’m on day 5 now and there’s no sign of her getting better. Still don’t know where the infections coming from... but if I took her to the docs this morning they would’ve laughed me out she was normal temp and running round giggling. This is just so weird...?! Would probably worry less if she was older but from experience when their temps are this high, this young, for this long it’s usually bacterial and needs treatment?

Taw how is your little boy today? X

He's back on the sofa, unfortunately.

He slept well, woke up full of beans, went to train club, ran out of steam half way through lunch, and it's been downhill since. He's lying under a blanket, speaking in a Junior Man-flu voice, and I still don't know what is wrong with him! His temperature is up again, and I'm losing hope for work tomorrow - this has been dragging on since Thursday...

Redskyandrainbows67 · 10/02/2019 19:45

Usually a temp with no other symptoms I’d say urine infection. Maybe ask them to recheck her wee. You can usually just do at reception - ask for a pot, go to bathroom to get sample, and a nurse will check it later in day.

Widget123 · 10/02/2019 22:10

Ditto Taw, I’m definately not leaving her tmro she’s on me now temps back up to 40 taking her back to GP first thing... never knew how hard it was to catch a urine sample from a toddler in nappies... doc didn’t seem that worried the other day that she had no other symptoms yet a friend last year had her toddler admitted for 2 nights because he had a high temp and they couldn’t find a reason for it, I hope I’m not missing something... will keep you posted. I hope your little boy gets better soon xx

My sons just over something similar. He had w bit of a cough though. No pain anywhere, no earache, no sore throat, no vomiting, normal poos, appetite ok, drank plenty but had a really high temp I struggled to bring down.

He's fine now, temp lasted 4 days in total and then disappeared.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 10/02/2019 22:44

Take her to hospital if you are worried. I think I would given the temp and how long it’s gone on for.

Mar19901 · 10/02/2019 22:53

Going through exactly same situation with my little one. We on day 11 2 trips to gp later telling me his chest ears and throat are clear i spent last night with him in a&e. they did bloods which showed infection levels slightly raised. they did a chest xray given his poor respiratory history which showed a collapse lung. he is on iv antibiotics and some oxygen now and maintenance fluids as he wasnt tolerating his tube feeds due to high temp. looking at yet another 2 week hospital stay 3 weeks from the last discharge 😞

hope all our little ones get better soon

SinkGirl · 11/02/2019 15:54

My little one had high temps through Friday and Saturday. Fine since. Fine this morning. Just spiked another 39+ fever and now has a runny nose and itchy eyes.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 11/02/2019 17:21

My DS seemed OK this morning so I brought him to nursery (rightly or wrongly) and said I would collect him a bit early. Just picked him up and apparently his temp has been up and down between 38.6 and 37.4, and he hasn't been as active as usual.

They didn't call me because at this point they say half the children have the same virus - temperatures, watery runny nose, reduced appetite. They are just resigned to it now, and only calling parents if the temperature goes too high, or the child feels unwell.

He's back on the sofa again. No end in sight but I've stopped worrying, except about losing my job.
