Grumbling appendix??

Dd is 12 and has been suffering from stomach pain for 10 days. Gp initially thought it was a UTI (she found it sore to pee, had to pee much more often) and prescribed antibiotics. Dd took them but the stomach pain got worse. Went back to the gp last Tuesday and were sent to children's ward of local hospital. Checked her urine (traces of protein) and blood but nothing untoward. Dd now had stomach pain in her right side of tummy, where the appendix is located. We were given penicillin to take and sent home.

Dd has now completed the penicillin but the stomach pain has got worse. Went to the gp yesterday and were sent back to the hospital. Bloods done again which were fine and she had an ultrasound which didn't show anything. Were sent home again after 7 hours after being told there's nothing they can do.

Cut to today and the pain has got worse. She's missed so much school and is utterly miserable. The pain is coming every 4 or 5 minutes. I've phoned the ward she was in (48 hour open access after being in) but they still don't seem concerned - they're contacting the gynae unit incase they can help. Her periods started 1.5 years ago and had been pretty regular although she skipped one in December and it came yesterday. She's never bothered by her periods, they are heavy but she doesn't get cramps.

It's horrible to see her like this - she is v sporty and trains 4 times a week but hasn't been able to do this for nearly a fortnight so I know she's I'll! Any ideas what it could be?? My initial thoughts were grumbling appendix especially as it's lasting so long.

Has she been checked for ovarian torsion? She should be as it could be very serious.

The gynae checked her scan this afternoon and have said everything looks fine. It just isn't right to be in pain for so long.

Mesenteric adenitis? Often mistaken for appendicitis.

My DD (11) has a flu type virus at the moment that is giving her pain on the left side beneath her ribs. i think it's part of the virus.

Unless your DD is reacting the anti biotics?

sorry to hear she's suffering x

We were sent to A&E about 3 times with dd2 (by experienced GP) to check for appendicitis. It turned out to be severe anxiety which brought on stomach ache.

Thanks everyone. Her glands all seem fine which is good. Don't think it's a reaction to the antibiotics as it started before she took them and the course finished yesterday.

Just feel really let down by the hospital as they're so uninterested. Dd was in tears with the pain yesterday at the hospital and they just said it's just one of those things, they may never find out what it is, not very reassuring.

At a loss as to what to do now.

I think what used to be called grumbling appendix, is really Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). If your DD is still in a lot of pain, then take her back to the GP.

Probably quite far from it but a prolonged stomach migraine?
