Ear infection or teething?

My baby is 12 weeks now and for the last week she’s been on amoxicillin for a chest infection. This is due to finish on Tuesday. For the past few days she has been pulling on her ear or the hair behind her ear and seems in pain. Mostly the right ear, but sometimes the left. Her ears are a bit more waxy than normal, but normal colour ear wax. Calpol does help. She doesn’t seem to have a fever with the thermometer I have, but waiting for a better one to be delivered tomorrow.

For a few weeks now she’s been slobbering more, fists in mouth, red cheeks and generally looking like she is teething. But her gums don’t look particularly red or swollen yet.

How am I supposed to know whether this is teething or she has an ear infection? I don’t want to waste the doctors time for teething, and she’s already on antibiotics anyway, but I hate seeing her suffer and would feel awful if it’s something that can be helped. Our doctors will always fit babies in on the same day, but I don’t want to take advantage of this if it’s not needed.
