Ds 6 overweight?! Height/weight

My son got weighed and measured recently and from this a quick google for a BMI thing it came up his overweight. However I'm confused if anyone could give me some insight please

It said his bmi is 17.5 which I thought was in the healthy range unless it differs for children. It then said about his weight for age but surely his weight for age is going to be high if his height for age is also high?

I've had a look at a height/weight growth chart and as far as I can tell he is on 91st for height and 98th for weight.

I don't think he looks overweight but then I've seen our ideas on normal weight have become skewed so guess I could be wrong.

This post inspired me to weigh my son (just turned 3) who was 2 stone 8. I googled average weight for a 3 year old and was a bit freaked out to see its much lighter than this! So I measured him (I know he is tall but didn't know his height) and he is 100cm, so the BMI tool puts him on the 71st centile. Phew! Will be keeping an eye though thanks OP for raising it. We definitely have skewed perceptions of what's normal these days!

If he is in the 90th percentiles for weight and height then I don’t think it’s a worry at all as he sounds like he’s in proportion for his height and weight!!

Ds was out of proportion (apparently). He was 91st for weight but very short for his age. He was weighed at school which said he was overweight. Although he’s always looked a tad chubby he’s never looked overweight to me, in the right size clothes - for a few years he was in smaller clothes for his age!!

The thing is surely this calls for common sense. Op it is clear from your photos your ds looks the picture of health and not overweight. Kids change so much as they grow.

He looks on the larger side of healthy. Not overweight, but a tad chunkier than average. Fo comparison, my very muscly 8.5 yr old girl weighs the same as him at 10 CMS shorter, and is 50th centile thereabouts. My son, at the same age and weight as OP's son is 8kgs lighter, down around 10th centile. Both equally healthy but very different. 🤷

My daughter is 5 she is 117cm and 22kg in weight she is very slim and I can see her ribs. The nhs bmi calculator says she is 71st centile and in the healthy range for her age. If I use the charts in her red book she is 99.6 for height and 91st for weight. Does this mean she is overweight or in proportion? It confuses me tbh.
