Hi there

My 5 week old was prescribed Gaviscon for reflux yesterday. Can anyone advise how long it takes to work? Poor little thing was crying for hours again last night Sad understand it might take a couple of days to see a difference?

Thank you

It can make things worse as it can cause constipation so sometimes the reflux can improve but the side effects are equally as bad.

If you are bottle feeding then carobel thickener is probably better as it has less side effects.

For us Gaviscon didn’t do anything and my son needed carobel, ranitidine, omeprazole and a fairy free diet. Also tilting the cot and keeping him upright for as much of the day as possible.

I hope things improve for you soon. The Living With Reflux charity is ace.

my lo has severe reflux and the gaviscon doesn’t really work for him. it might help the sickness slightly as it makes the milk thicker so easier to keep down but he still vomits a lot and had the pain. the dr prescribed ranitidine after me trying the gaviscon for a week. i’d keep trying the gaviscon for about a week and then head back to gp if still no better.

Thanks both and sorry to hear your little ones both had reflux too. My daughter is breastfed but assume that Gaviscon works the same? X
