Toddler stool holding

Hi. I'm hoping anyone may be able to give me some tips to help my ds who is 21 months.

A few months back he became constipated due to him being a fussy eater and as a result passed a large stool and ended up with a fissure. This has now healed fine but my lo is holding in his stools, probably fightened about it hurting. The problem being is because he's not that strong yet, he can often soil a little whilst trying to hold in but results in numerous clean ups throughout the day which is contributing to a sore, red bottom and seems to be vicious cycle.

He is not constipated anymore and when he does eventually go, usually after a couple of days, the motion is soft.
We did try potty training prior to this which may have possibly contributed and the only way to get him to pass a proper motion is by sitting him on the potty/toilet when we can see him holding it in which is forcing the potty training and I'm thinking he may associate something bad with potty training and then have lots of struggles.

Any tips would be really helpful.

You need to read the ERIC website. They have a very good telephone helpline too.
