My 5 year old has always had trouble with his chest and coughs etc and has been in hospital a few times in a pretty bad way (resus & icu) because if it. The problem is now even when he just has a normal cough I have panic attacks and get badly stressed incase it happens again I hate this feeling Sad

Just to add most of the coughs he get will only go away with prednisolone... would be really grateful to hear from anyone who's in my situation just so I don't feel so alone

Same situation with DD- she’s nearly 3. Over 15 hospital admissions. Oxygen, magnesium, steroids, bronchoscopies, nearly constant antibiotics etc. She has a abit of a cold at the moment- usually she ends up in hospital within a few days. Last time was last month for 5 days. You aren’t alone Flowers

Sorry you’re in this situation, my little girl is 4 and we’ve had 2 hospital stays recently with this too (resus and admitted to a ward but not ICU thankfully). It’s not nice at all. Is he on any kind of preventer? The hospital doctor prescribed Montelukast for my daughter but I’m not keen to try it because of the potential side effects (night terrors, aggressive behavioural changes, depression) so we’ve been prescribed a preventer inhaler instead. Only just got it so time will tell I guess whether it helps next time she picks up a virus...

We tried Montelukast- had no side effects but it didn’t work. Our respiratory consultant said it only works 50% of the time

Geekeyes0193 · 21/12/2018 23:04

He's had montelukast before but didn't work for him either and horrendous behaviour changes!! Thank you so much for your replies makes me feel much better because sometimes you feel like you're the only person going through it don't you I really hope your little ones get over it without need for hosp at this time of year !! Poor babies Sad xx

I was worried about Montelukast but it's worked for my son and luckily no side effects. Cough comes back if he's not on it.

If you have Facebook search for a group called viral induced wheeze support network you'll find a couple of hundred people in the same situation as you on there (my little boy is the same)

@FestiveForestieraNoel keep in mind the potential side effects. They can occur at any time taking them (immediately or a year or more later). Montelukast works really well for some at controlling asthma but the side effects can be devastating if not recognised.
