Lansoprazole - dissolving question?

hazeyjane · 19/12/2018 20:03

D's has Lansoprazole dispersable MUPs. He will not take them dissolved on the tongue, but it says that they can be dissolved in water and taken this way. D's also would refuse to take it in water like this, however I have found if it is dissolved in the tiniest bit of water, 2ml ish, and mixed into chocolate spread he will eat this on a breadstick.

Does anyone know if this is ok, or does it need to be dissolved in a greater volume of liquid?

If it is ok to dissolve on a tongue then I don’t see why more water would be needed but I would be asking a pharmacist for total peace of mind.

Thankyou.....that makes sense. I asked the pharmacist at our chemist today, and they helpfully advised me to follow the instructions on the medicine.

I've also rung ds's gastroenterologist but they usually take an age to get back to me.

I will try gp tomorrow. It is just such a bloody nightmare getting d's to take any medicine, I just want to get it sorted!!

I am more familiar with the omeprazole MUPS, but it's a very similar drug. Our paediatric pharmacist has no problem with it being sprinkled in apple sauce or yoghurt. So I can't see chocolate spread being a problem.

As long as be takes the whole dose, it's fine

Listen to your pharmacist, they are the expert , on the link it says having food WITH or up to 30 minutes AFTER taking lanzoprazole causes the drug to reduce by 50% effectiveness ...they have two studies to back it up...

You can’t mix them with anything I’m afraid but you can mix omeprazole with purée/juice/yogurt so ask your Dr to consider changing the prescription

Thankyou.
Unfortunately the pharmacist was no5 much help, and it was another pharmacist who said we were ok to crush them
I have since spoken to the gastroenterologist and he seemed to think it was fine to dissolve it in a tiny bit of water, then mix it with chocolate spread.
After Christmas I will ask him about the not taking it with food thing.

Haxey Jane, how do you get in with the gastro doctor? Did you manage to get your little one to take the medicine in chocolate spread and was this successful?
My little one has just been prescribed this same medicine too and I'm struggling to get her to take it 😣
