Toddlers cough not going

Just looking for some advice. My ds2 has had 2 long lingering colds over the past 6 weeks both accompanied by a cough. He’s now absolutely fine within himself but has a runny nose and a cough which just don’t seem to be shifting. (It’s definitely not croup or whooping cough) and he’s otherwise happy, eating properly etc. I don’t think it’s necessary to take him to the docs as he doesn’t have a temp, is otherwise happy and probably more likely to pick something else up at the doctors.
It coincided with him starting nursery 2 mornings a week so I think his body is just building up it’s immune system.
I’m giving him plenty of water and also honey to help sooth his throat but is there anything else I can be doing?

One of my children seems to get this sort of thing regularly and it lingers. The gp always says to place pillows under his mattress to raise up head end of bed. Keep the room a little moist, if you have a humidifier. Milk can make it worse as it costs the throat and produces more mucus, so if he still loves his milk at bed time, and won’t go without it, I’d water it down a bit.

If you don’t gave a humidifier, you could put a bowl of water on a warm radiator.
If not, maybe a warm bath before bed and ice pops to soothe his throat.
I hope you both get some sleep tonight. We were up since 3 last night Sad

Thank you everyone. I’ve found putting a wet towel on his radiator at bedtime stops him coughing overnight. I’ve also been giving him honey and onion syrup the past couple of days after scouring mumsnet and it does seem to be reducing his cough and also thinning out any mucus.
Luckily he’s not bothered about milk - he has it in his porridge in the morning but I think the warmth of the porridge on his throat would outweigh the negative of using milk?
He’s absolutely fine in himself apart from this so fingers crossed it clears up ASAP. Thank you so much for replying Flowers

Quick update - after searching through mumsnet, I started giving my son honey and onion syrup (onion soaked overnight in honey then strained out). Several spoons a day over about 3 to 4 days. Possibly a coincidence but his cough totally cleared up as has his runny nose thank goodness!
