Toddler not eating after tummy bug

DD is almost 2. She was sick once on Thursday night, and then went back to sleep. There's a bug doing the rounds at the moment which seems to make them sick once and then that's it.

Friday she seemed ok, not eating, but was running round and jumping about, and then at 5pm was suddenly sick again. I assumed it was the jumping about that had done it, on top of an unsettled tummy.

Fine all day yesterday, ate a bit and drank plenty.

This morning she was eating a bit of pancake, when she suddenly seemed to choke, then coughed and was slightly sick again.

She's never had a tummy bug before, so I'm not sure - is this still the bug? Or can they be a bit "gaggy" for a few days after a bug? Does this count as an episode of vomiting for the purposes of the "48-hour" rule, or is it ok to take her out to toddler group tomorrow?

If you were at my toddler group I’d expect you to stay away! Hope she’s feeling better

Thanks @Differentcorner! I decided to stay at home. She seems better today, so hopefully it's passed!

With my DC I definitely found that being sick from a bug then made their gag reflexes and tummies very sensitive, and made them likely to be sick again over the coming days. Any vomit would still be loaded with germs whatever the reason for them being sick again, so you need to stay at home with her until she's been at least 48 hours clear of any v or d.

With regard to food, I would keep it light and casual. Offer small nibbles through the day rather than sitting down to a meal, but don't pressure her to eat at all. It doesn't matter in the slightest if she goes a good few days or more without eating much, as long as she's drinking a reasonable amount.

My 2.5 year old had something similar. Was sick on a Tuesday night, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday night and then again on Sunday night. It took her a good few days after that to get her appetite back.

Thanks! She seems much better now, but milk seems to be coming back up, so I've been giving her water. She's eating bits and pieces, but not loads, and is still a bit clingy and generally sad :(. No vomiting for several days though, so I think we're safe to venture out again!

Tummy bugs sometimes give people temporary lactose intolerance so maybe avoid dairy for a little bit and reintroduce it slowly.
