Ds is 11 and very skinny. Now the weather has turned he constantly complaining of being cold. He wears a thermal vest, shirt, school jumper, blazer and down coat to school but comes home freezing. He is active and never still. He has a rugby tournament at school tomorrow during school hours and will be outside for 3 hours. He won’t be allowed to wear a coat even when he is not partaking and he is dreading it. It takes his colour and he looks drained when he gets cold and makes him feel poorly. Is there any medical that make him feel so rough

Can he eat a higher fat diet? That would help.

I've no advice about the rugby, except maybe smuggle in hand warmers, but for everyday good thick soles on shoes make a huge difference, as do thicker longer socks.

Thanks pickle I will definitely look at his shoes and invest in some longer warm socks - great idea.

Also, cycling shorts underneath whatever he wears for rugby may help.

I remember my legs going orange and purple in the cold when I was at school. Horrible. We seem to survive though.

Have his thyroid checked.

Thermal leggings. His top half is layered, but what about his bottom half? Sheepskin insoles or thermal insoles. Thermal hiking style socks.

If he's skinny, he's not got a lot of insulating fat on his body. What does he eat at lunch and breakfast? Give him a hot thermos with soup / stew / pasta to take in for lunch?

A hot breakfast even if it's just heated up cereal or porridge rather than a full English. Hot drinks at break time - I used to have a small thermos with hot squash for school. My mates were soon jealous in winter. Warm him from the inside out as well as clothing.

You could try a sports/outdoor shop & look at their base layers etc. Does he have a good warm hat?

It may be worth getting his iron and b12 levels checked.
You say he's skinny, is he actually in the healthy weight range for his hight? Is he getting enough fluid?

Height, not hight!
