Hi my 12 year old DD has lost 5/6lbs in weight over the last couple of months - she has also grown about an inch so she is now 5ft and weighs 90lbs

She is a normally fit and healthy child very active as a dancer has training 4 nights a week but I have noticed a reduced appetite in the last month or so aswell not really eating breakfast during the week and doesnt always eat her packed lunch but does eat dinner although smaller portions than the rest of us but shes always been like that

Just wondering whether I should be concerned about the weight loss and whether its unusual at this age any advice appreciated

my 13 y/o dd lost over 14lbs in 3 weeks, i do not know how but we had not changed anything in her diet and she ate well, there was nothing wrong but if you are concerned visit a gp

Is your concern that she may be restricting her food intake?

tinks69 · 22/11/2018 08:53

I think my main concern is that there may be an underlying illness brewing but wasnt sure if it was normal for girls to lose a bit of weight during puberty - shes always been on the slim side but she's muscly due to her dance training

I dont think she is deliberating restricting her food as she will eat when shes hungry and she has never really been one for breakfast or a big lunch plus she just leaves her lunch in her school bag and I think if she was missing meals on purpose she would throw it away so that I wouldnt be aware that she wasnt eating it

What I dont want to do is make a big deal of it though to her - she was off school yesterday and today with stomach pains so may make a GP appt and casually mention it to them

Worth keeping a subtle eye on. Maybe see if she wants to do the food shop with you and choose some bits for her packed lunch.

It is quite normal to lose weight and shoot up in height at your daughter's age. As long as she is feeling well, don't worry about it.

I would keep an eye but try not to make an issue of it, I think at 12yo they are changing so much some weight loss is probably normal.

I have a 12yo dd and some days she eats loads other days hardly anything, her shape keeps changing as well, its hard to keep up!

Thanks everyone - i took her to see the nurse as she has been off school with stomach pains and I mentioned the weight loss and she advised to keep an eye on the weight loss and her diet but not to make a big deal of it xx

I remember losing my appetite at about 13, around the time my periods started, and losing weight (not intentionally). I'm sure that for me it was hormonal. Sorted itself out when hormones settled down.
