Daughter's first period - preparations...

What I’ve learned in the past 24 hours:

Being prepared for my 11 year old daughter's first period doesn’t just mean giving her sanitary towels to take to school...(I’ve discovered) 😬😔

This is what I wish I’d done in preparation:

  • [ ] Let her choose some groovy reusable sanitary pads in advance (including a little bag and a ‘mucky bucket’ to put used ones into prior to washing)
  • [ ] Let her choose some absorbent leak proof pants
  • [ ] Get extra pyjama bottoms
  • [ ] Get loads of cheap dark pairs of knickers that she has permission to bin if required
  • [ ] Do some research - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/teenagers/1437358-Eeeeeek-first-period
  • [ ] give her a note for PE if necessary
  • [ ] Water bottle for extra hydration
  • [ ] Vitamins? Is she allowed iron now?
  • [ ] Get extra sheets for her bed
  • [ ] Get 2 mattress protectors
  • [ ] Replace her bunk bed with a normal one that she can get out of quickly
  • [ ] Get age appropriate pain killers
  • [ ] Be available to answer lots of questions and give hugs
  • [ ] Always have loads of toilet rolls
  • [ ] Give her a big thing of salt to remove stains
  • [ ] Give her her own washing basket in her bedroom
  • [ ] Have an enclosed bin in the bathroom
  • [ ] Let her talk for ages to her friends about it in private
  • [ ] Show her a hormonal graph so she can understand her mood swings (I used my Hormonology app for the graph)
  • [ ] Help her to create an emergency bag to take to school, which contains:
- [ ] Spare pair of clean knickers - [ ] Pocket size wet wipes - [ ] Pocket tissues - [ ] 2 reusable sanitary pads - [ ] Bag for soiled pads - [ ] Pain killers

Any additional advice will be very gratefully received

I've been recommended the apps Clue and Flo to track her periods, but we haven't used either of them yet...(Flo won't allow her to have been born in 2007!)

Sorry op but is some of that not overkill? A new bed, doesn't she have extra pjs, do you not normally have toilet roll in the house or a bin in the bathroom?!

NotANotMan · 16/11/2018 11:39

The fuck
I think you May be overthinking this a bit

shumway · 16/11/2018 11:40

OTT much?

mossyroundhill · 16/11/2018 11:45

Throw a period party and invite all her friends and family?

Santaispolishinghissleigh · 16/11/2018 11:47

Fuck dd is 13 and I have done naff all prep.
Am I a shit dm?

spoonfulofmuck · 16/11/2018 11:49

This cannot be real 😂

HotdogsareDogs · 16/11/2018 11:49

Salt sets stains, don't do that.

Have spare sanpro, let DD know where it is.
Suggest spare pants in bag.

The end. Why build it up to a massive drama?

SoupDragon · 16/11/2018 11:50

You are over thinking this

jq28 · 16/11/2018 11:50

Omg if my mum bombarded me with all this I'd have a meltdown.

busbottom · 16/11/2018 11:51

Jesus Christ

My DD's just got pads Grin

PinkDaffodil2 · 16/11/2018 11:52

Good god what happened? Hope it wasn’t too traumatic? Also how are there not bins for sanitary pads at school if she’s 11?

ADastardlyThing · 16/11/2018 11:52

Erm......ok!

HoleyCoMoley · 16/11/2018 11:52

Is she ok, I just had pads, bags, painkillers and a hot water bottle.

HotdogsareDogs · 16/11/2018 11:54

Also, don't do what my mum did. Ie tell my dad in front of me, and ask if I had removed the cardboard applicator tube (??!! Er yes)

BiscuitDrama · 16/11/2018 11:55

You need a cake. If you google period cake and look at images...

Witchend · 16/11/2018 12:34

You forgot to mention that you need to build her an extension with an en suite. Didn't you know everyone does that too?

al2002 · 16/11/2018 19:15

Never heard of anything so ridiculous.
This must be a joke.

melissasummerfield · 16/11/2018 19:19

@biscuitdrama why did i just google period cake Blush what the actual fuck!

ChippyMinton · 16/11/2018 19:24

And I though buying about 6 different brands/style/size of pads so DD could find a favourite was overkill...

dementedpixie · 16/11/2018 19:30

I wouldn't start with reusable pads tbh. Bad enough to have a first period without having to carry bloody ones about with you. I got the lillets starter pack from Tesco. Zippy bag is useful for carrying spare pants, pad, etc. Dd has bog standard black pants. Salt doesn't set blood stains but cold water does the job too.

dementedpixie · 16/11/2018 19:31

I use a period Calendar app to track mine. Don't think dd tracks hers tbh

KittensAndCake · 16/11/2018 19:41

Omg OP, you need a hobby 🤣

TeenTimesTwo · 16/11/2018 19:44

Actually I agree with most of the things in the OP.

With DD2 I have needed extra, extra pjs, and more sheets (not needed for DD1). She is still in a high sleeper, and I deal with stained things (though DD is asked to put them in cold water in basin).

The OPs list is very comprehensive and covers things others may not think of. e.g. We didn't have bins in downstairs toilet until DD1 needed them, it hadn't crossed my mind. Though we don't do reusable, or vitamins.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2018 19:45

No sign of the OP?

LordPickle · 16/11/2018 19:47

Is this real? Surely this is OTT to the extreme? All my mother did was give me sanitary pads once I started. Confused
