Oral sedation - 7mo baby

Anyone had any experience with oral sedation on such a little one? She is a very small 7mo too and breast fed only at moment.

She has to go for an MRI scan (with contrast) and I have to fast her for 4 hours,
So cut off at 5am for oral sedation at 9am - or thereabouts 🙄 Apprently it tastes awful and can get very stressful as it tastes shit and they are starving!

MRI is for a deep hemangioma she has over her eyebrow.

I’m worried as hell about the sedation and the 4 hour fasting... she is currently breastfed on demand. She also hates the car and it is half hour to the hospital...

Oh poor you and DD. Sounds extremely stressful and uncomfortable. It is probably not helpful to wonder whether the scan is really required, as you must have discussed this already. Hopefully someone with experience will come along.

We had to do something at 6 months - it was not great, but easier than we dreaded. Our Ds never took a dummy but it helped us through the last hour by holding it a bit in his mouth. Before the clock started we did a big feed, then kept him awake for a while so he slept through the hungrier bit. You'll get there!

Not the oral sedation part as my son had a GA, he had to fast from 6am until his operation at 2.30pm he was four months and fed on demand and he actually tolerated it brilliantly I thought he'd cry and cry and cry but he didn't. We tried to occupy him and he was grisly and unhappy but no where near as bad as I thought. He did have a massive cry when he was brought back to us from the theatre as we still couldn't feed him for half an hour. I'd say the whole process upset me much more than it did him.

Good luck to you both!

My lo had oral sedation and didnt mind the taste at all......but it did take longer than expected to get her off to sleep.
she was bothered by being hungry but lots of cuddles, walking up and down in the buggy finally got her to sleep.

Obvs check exactly what your department is happy with, but fasting is usually 4 hours for breastmilk, but 1-2 hours for clear fluids so it may be ok to have something if they're really sad. It may also be poss to put the sedation in a little squash too to hide the taste.
A few hours with a cranky baby will be worth it if you get the results you need from the scan.
