Hand foot and mouth, on bum?

Dd has come home from the child minders with spots around his mouth and bumps on his hands. CM wondered whether it was hand, foot and mouth.
I’ve just bathed him and have found sore looking spots between his bum cheeks.

Does this sound like h, f&m or something else?

How old? Sounds like nappy rash on the bum but no idea about the others

Littlebird88 · 03/10/2018 19:42

it is rife at the moment. has he had a high temp.

Wishiwascrafty · 03/10/2018 19:46

Hand foot and mouth very commonly gives lesions in nappy region. Should really be renamed hfm&b

Socksandshoes · 03/10/2018 20:09

He is 2.
It’s definately not nappy rash. It’s red but bumpy under the skin.
No temp at the moment but he does seem to be itching his hands a lot.
I have given him calpol and put a bit of calamine lotion on.
Thank you wishi maybe my first thoughts were right then. He also has spots behind his knees.

Is it a gp job or should I leave it to sort itself out?

Yes, it’s common in the nappy area.

DS is just getting over HFM.
He had is on the usual areas, but also inside and behind his ears, across his lower abdomen, genitals, bum and the entirety of both legs.
He had frequent cool baths, with a sock full of porridge oats to soothe his skin.

Can’t do anything specific-it’s viral. Calpol and difflam spray. Often comes with a sore throat so soft or cold foods might help. Usual rules apply-as long as he’s drinking, peeing and alert you’re good.

Picture of fairly typical lesions below:

Thank you all so much. Poor little love is not happy.
Will have a look for difflam spray.

Ah, the picture has suddenly appeared. The spots are not quite as big as that and are on the inside of his bum cheeks.

OP my DS who is also 2 came home from nursery with spots around his groin area which I assumed was nappy rash as nothing anywhere else. However he has since come out in spots on his hands and feet and in his mouth.

Not quite as bad as the pic above and are going now after 4-5 days. However his mouth is still quite bad and he's struggling to eat bless him Sad

DinosaurPoop · 03/10/2018 20:36

Forgot to add took him to doctor on advice from 111 and has been diagnosed as HF&M.

Moodycoo · 03/10/2018 20:47

When my daughter had it it started on her nappy area and behind her knees. Her hands and feet weren't affected badly at all.

tictac86 · 03/10/2018 20:50

Piriton may help the itch

Faster · 03/10/2018 20:50

This was DS’s lower leg, the little red pimples turned into blisters, then scabs and now looks a bit eczema like as the skin is finally healing.

Thank you all again. Called the docs this morning and was told to bring him in. It is definately hand, foot and mouth. Lovely gp gave him some antihistamine to help with the itching.
Poor little thing was going mad with it last night so we got very little sleep.
Hoping that the antihistamine will make a difference.

It's only called hand foot and mouth because they're the most likely areas to be affected. DD and DS both had them on the backs of their knees, bottoms and arms too.
