Bizarre lump under graze after a fall (pic)

Anyone seen this type of thing before ? DS3 who is 9, fell in the playground at lunchtime. When he showed me the graze on his side after school it looked just like a normal graze. However when he has taken his top off now to get ready for bed, it has a lump. I'm presuming it's normal but slightly mystified. I thought I'd seen it all with injuries!
Any thoughts gratefully received Smile

Bumping for someone who knows more than me! It could simply be harmless swelling but where on his side is it? I would worry about internal injuries to organs but then I have anxiety. BlushCould he have fallen on anything?

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2018 20:16

It's just above the waistband of his trousers on the left hand side

He should see a doctor, thats pretty swollen.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 24/09/2018 20:19

I'd get him checked over by GP or MIU, it looks unusual to me and I have two dcs who are accident prone.

Imoldandlost · 24/09/2018 20:25

I would take him to ooh tbh. That’s a really big lump.

Wolfiefan · 24/09/2018 20:27

Hope he’s ok.

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2018 20:34

Well he seems to be ok in that it seems to be "normally" sore. But it's a bit unsettling that there is a lump at all. Am going to consult with DH who is due home soon.

Hope he is ok, did he hurt his ribs when he fell.

WipsGlitter · 24/09/2018 20:51

Is that the side of his torso?

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2018 20:55

Yes that's his side

Is it on his hip bone - swelling can indicate trauma to bones and joints

TeddyIsaHe · 24/09/2018 21:08

Ouch! I’d be phoning 111 for an OOH appointment to get that properly checked out tonight I think.

TheHobbitMum · 24/09/2018 21:13

I'd absolutely get that checked out

dogdaysandcatnights · 24/09/2018 21:31

How is it now?

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2018 21:47

Just about to have another look

OP posts:
HoleyCoMoley · 24/09/2018 22:12

Is it still swollen

Bunnybigears · 24/09/2018 22:13

I would get it looked into, thats a strange place to have a lump like that.

AFingerofFudge · 24/09/2018 22:19

Have just had a look (he woke up as I tried to put the torch on and accidentally flashed it in his face!) Thankfully it looks like it's going down now and DS3 said sleepily that it didn't hurt, so after a bit of a conflab between myself and DH, we're going to wait until the morning and DH will assess it as soon as he wakes (I'll be at work by then) and will decide then. Thanks all for your opinions. Hopefully it will have gone down by the morning!

My son had something very similar last term. He fell playing football and scraped / grazed his side about half an inch above his waistband. It came up in a lump identical to your photo. I must be honest I was a bit lax and never worried about it apart from putting some savlon on and it didn’t seem to bother him any more than a normal graze. It went down and gradually went away. Oddly enough he’s grazed the exact same area again today playing football but no lump this time. Hopefully your son’s injury will be the same but don’t put off getting it checked out just because ours was nothing!

Egg · 24/09/2018 22:29

Actually I’ve just clicked on your photo (I only looked at the small version before) and your son's injury itself is quite a lot bigger than my son’s was, although the look of it is the same.

welshmist · 24/09/2018 22:31

I dont like the look of that a 111 call wouldnt hurt.

Nogodsnomasters · 24/09/2018 23:21

I would have that looked at if it was me.

Secretmum41 · 25/09/2018 10:46

A friends dd fell and banged her forehead when she was 3 ... the lump that came up was absolutely huge, colossal! Obviously she got checked out and all was fine ... it’s apparently the bodies way of reacting to the injury and protecting itself,

I’d still get it checked out though for peace of mind.

steppemum · 25/09/2018 10:50

I know that with foreheads and shins, they often come up in huge bumps because the skin is thin and there is bone just under so there is nowhere for the swelling to go, except outwards.
If you son is quite slim, I wonder if the same is true as it is on his ribs? Thin skin, with bone under?

I would want it checked though if still swollen this morning

NewYoiker · 25/09/2018 13:50

I don't like the look of that. I'd go to A&E if he were my child
