Just wondering if anyone can help, my lb has lost 1kg going from 14kg to 13kg this past year (he'll be 3 in Nov) the last few months ive noticed his poo floats too. Since about 18 months he hasn't really slept either, coming in our room during the night and being up and down all night. Could this be linked and does anyone have any idea what this could be??

I’d say it very much depends on the size your child was a year ago. Whilst weight loss in children isn’t common, if he was a chubby 2 yr old, he could grow into a slender 3 year old and still lose a bit of weight. Have you looked at the children’s weight/bmi charts on the nhs pages? What is his bmi now? Is he in the healthy range?

His floating poos could be due to diet. Is he drinking fizzy drinks? Eating lots of fatty foods? These can all cause poo to float; but similarly so can intolerances or other gastric issues.

Children not sleeping is fairly common and again can be both physical reasons as well as emotional ones. Maybe he’s going through a period of change and needs extra reassurance, maybe there’s a new baby in the house and he wants to be part of the nighttime action, maybe he’s in pain. Increased activity can also mean weight loss.

Individually these things aren’t uncommon. Together they may paint a picture if intolerances or allergies. But I’d look at overall weight, health and happiness of the child. A trip to the doctor might be in order if this persists.

Is he otherwise well in himself?
