Hand picking in 8YO

DS(8) has started picking at his hands all the time, to the point that a couple of his knuckles are sore and bleeding. He says he doesn't know why he does this and that it's not related to feeling anxious, stressed, etc., and from my observations it doesn't seem to be.

I would have said he's got pretty good mental health - he's confident, social, happy, etc. He can get scared of being on his own and is very stubborn. I've noticed the hand picking only for a couple of months; he's adamant that he's been doing it for about a year. It's pretty constant now.

I was thinking I should take him to a CBT specialist. Has anyone experienced this or got any advice?
