Chicken pox everywhere....should I cut their hair?

Both my DS (4&2) have erupted in chicken pox over the weekend. The heat isn’t helping with the itchiness but I’m doing a combination of Calpol (NO NUROFEN), Piriton, PoxClin, oatmeal and bicarbonate baths. All of which are a battle as they don’t like medicines or anything on their skin. The other thing is they both have fairly longish hair, not long long but enough that it covers their forehead/ears/neck and I’m worried that with the heat and sweating it’s making things worse. I’m really tempted to get the clippers out and cut their hair short to try and make them more comfortable....is that daft?

Sounds extreme but understandable! Could you just pop a little ponytail in to keep it off their foreheads and necks? I'm sure I ended up doing something similar with DS's long curls when he had dreadful chicken pox aged 18 months!
Hope they're feeling better soon!

It’s daft. Chicken pox is short lived and generally a very minor illness in small children. A fan might be better or a shaded paddling pool. It does sound like you’re making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill.

Try calamine lotion. Most children with chicken pox don’t need any drugs at all. Their temperature is only usually up slightly for a few days. It will be over quickly.

Wait it out

Thanks folks. Unfortunately it’s not long enough to tie up just long enough to be annoying the hell out of them! I don’t think I’m making mountains out of molehills, just looking for ways to make them more comfortable as they are both really suffering with it. I know it’s not a major illness but the discomfort is disproportionate! Christ I remember having it when I was a kid and it was bloody horrendous!

Yes I would cut their hair it will grow back and it won't look silly as they are boys! Bicarbonate soda in the bath helps with the itching too. Hope they recover soon!

8 drops off lavender essential oil along with bicarb really soothes the spots and eases the itching. Avoid calomine lotion as it dries the spots and makes them itch more. Cream is better.
