It's worms isn't it?

Feel like I've posted this section about 49 times recently, anyhow, This afternoon ds age 3 started to scratch his bum but not intensely. I had a look and couldn't see anything, his anus was quite red though and sore looking. At bed time he dozed off and was asleep for all of 20 mins before squirming around and waking himself up crying about a "sore itchy bum", he was actually quite distressed about it. I gave piriton and calpol and tried anusol cream on it that I had for my piles. He was up feeling uncomfortable for well over an hour but has managed to go bk to sleep. Is it definitely worms? He's never had them before and he's my only child so no experience. I had another look when he was awake and upset but still couldn't see anything other than a red inflamed bottom. I have 3 questions, one is how long does the medicine take to work? And 2- do you have any other suggestions about how to relief the itch itself in the mean time? 3 - do I need to keep him off nursery? Obviously I can't get him the medicine until tomorrow. Thank you

You need Ovex. It works brilliantly, really quickly. You all need to take it, though, not just your DS.

A damp flannel will soothe his poor bum if he wakes up again, and if you get the Ovex down him tomorrow morning, he should be fine again by the evening. Weirdly, it's only itchy at night. No idea how the worms tell the time.

I wouldn't keep him off nursery, but I would tell them. It probably came from there, and they need to be doing more hand washing.

Hi thanks for the reply! He's still itching this morning but again not in an intense unbearable way like last night. I'm gonna get the medicine this morning before nursery and give it to him straight away before I drop him off as I don't start work til 9.30. From reading online do we definitely need to take the meds again 2 weeks from now? It's just that 2 weeks from now we'll be in spain so I need to know if I have to take it with me in our suitcase! Oh dear.

One way of checking is either when he's asleep or if the itching wakes him up, go in his room but don't turn any lights on. Use a torch and check his bottom, chances are you will spot a couple of worms. Ovex, his own towels and sheets which you hot wash, trim his nails and give them a gentle nailbrush especially in the mornings and shower him every morning to wash away any eggs. You'll soon have it under control.

Hi penfold, I did have a look last night when he was awake n upset but still couldn't see anything other than a red inflamed sore bum. He slept in our bed last night because of the upset so I've stripped my bed this morning and boil washed it with his towel from yesterday and his pyjamas from last night. We got ovex this morning and all had a dose each and I trimmed his nails before nursery too but I don't have a nail brush. I'm just hoping I will get rid of it first time because we are going to Spain in 12 days!
