Constant coughing

Hi, when my ds 3.9 yrs gets a cold/viral infection he will cough every 5 minutes all night long, it probably fully wakes him about 4 times a night when it gets to the point of him gagging, the rest of the time he stays asleep but is blatantly not in a deep/restful sleep, tossing turning and is exhausted for days on end because of it.

He's got one at the minute hence me posting. I feel like I've probably tried everything but incase there is some remedy I've missed, here's what I've tried already - honey, piriton, vapour plug in, cool mist humidifier, extra pillow, vaporub on chest, back and feet with socks, extra fluids, window open/closed, over the counter children's cough medicine which is just bloody sugar syrup in my opinion but thought it worth a shot. The only thing that sometimes works is the piriton can some nights give him about 2hrs of no coughing after a dose but this can only be given every 4-6hrs, other times though it appears to do nothing? Anyway, any tricks I've missed along the way or am I out of options?? Thank you.

Has he ever been he led for asthma?
My DH always gets a cough like this when he has a cold and it's due to his asthma. Inhalers help.

No it's never been mentioned by a doctor and I've had him at the gp numerous times with the coughs, they say a cough can last up to 2 weeks after a cold and it's all normal 🙄

Definitely investigate asthma. My DS's asthma presents as a persistent cough at night. Inhalers really help.

DH wasn't diagnosed until his 20's because it's not 'typical' asthma. Ask your GP to investigate.

Any type of bug going around and my ds will cough all night long. He was referred to the asthma nurse and now has a prevent or inhaler and it has made the world of difference.

Thanks everyone, I honestly thought an asthma cough was night times even when well so since his is always while sick I thought it was normal! I think I will take to gp on Monday if cough not gone (which it won't be!) and ask, thank you.

Sounds exactly like my son. After two emergency hospital admissions he was finally diagnosed with asthma at age 4. It only affects him when he has a cold/viral infection and the normal asthma inhalers (seretide) don't work, he has to take the steroid ones.
