So dd (9 months) has been unwell for a few days now; fevers, up all night; but nothing drastic. The last 48 hours she's been getting progressively hotter and more uncomfortable so has been on the Calpol/Nurofen since yesterday evening. She's still so, so hot. I've been at home with her today.

This afternoon I thought she was holding her head funny or hunching or something (usually I'm holding her so I haven't had the chance to really look at her) but I checked and it was a golf ball sized lump around where her salivary gland is!

Obviously I packed her straight into the car and off to the walk-in. The nurse prescribed antibiotics for her bug and said it was "probably a gland", but wanted me to wait to see the doctor about it later. I couldn't wait though; I'd been there hours and was already late to get my 2 year old from nursery. We agreed I'd bring her back in the morning.

Now it occurs to me it could be mumps!! It looks just like it. I'm scared! It'll be okay to see the doctor in the morning won't it? How much do I need to worry??

Does mumps not usually affect both sides? Have you heard of cases in your area?

RatRolyPoly · 29/05/2018 21:50

I haven't heard of any cases round here demented, but then again I don't exactly have my ear to the ground... According to Google it doesn't have to be both sides; she looks exactly like the pictures of babies that come up - they all have the swelling only on the one side.

I'm a little less nervous now, I'm sure the doctor will set us straight in the morning. Thanks for your reply Smile

When I had mumps as a kid it was only one side. It's a virus OP you can't do much about it , the only problem is if she had an issue with immune which you'd know about already. By the way when I had mumps my cheek was pretty much on the floor, it wasn't just swollen . So maybe just a temporarily enlarged gland?

Good luck x

Has she had the MMR?

LoniceraJaponica · 29/05/2018 23:01

She is only nine months - too young for the MMR.

Mincepies76 · 29/05/2018 23:54

Ha, long time since I had a baby! Hope she's ok, horrible when little ones are poorly 🙁

Yes, it could just be a gland couldn't it. Fingers crossed :) I've had to come into work today so dp will be taking her to her appointment this afternoon. Hopefully that's just what it is. She did have inflamed tonsils yesterday, hence the antibiotics. Thanks folks.
