Help!!! 4m old suspected Sepsis. Handhold pls

My 4m old has a uti and admitted to hospital. He looked well, about to be discharged then he went very blue and mottled. Breathing fine. He was shakey. I am so scared. He is on a broad spectrum abx until cultures come back.

Im scared. Anyone had experience of their child with sepsis?

He is fine feeding then gets very poorly when calpol wears off. He had a uti 2 months ago too. I don't know why I'm writing this. I think i just need to get over the shock of pushing the red button when he went blue.

No experience but here to hold hands, you must be so scared! Your ds is in the best place and being looked after by professionals. 4 months is still small so it's totally normal for him to go downhill as calpol wears off, it's possibly because a high fever is creeping back up on him each time? Have you got anyone in the hospital with you for support? Xo

Sounds very similar to mine. Have they done ultrasounds for kidney reflux and checked the potential for posterior urethral valves? It will all be a distant memory soon, relentless right now. Best wishes to you and him

How frightening for you but a real positive that immediate treatment was on hand and he'll be well taken care of.

Remember to look after yourself too.

Oh and my son had it twice from UTIs. He is so so tough and you would never ever know - three now. Doesn't make it any better right now but they are so resilient.

poppingalf - has your little one got PUV?

My DS was admitted to A&E at 17 days old with a severe UTI causing sepsis and meningitis and it started from PUV.

Oh OP, I'll hold your hand. I was in a&e this week with my 18month old and they were hinting at bacterial infections and possibly admitting him. Luckily it was nothing so serious - just a nasty virus. It was so scary though. You really are in the best place, fast action is so important. Hoping and praying your little one is ok x

My son had the same thing at 3 weeks old, it was terrifying. He is now a rambunctious, crazy two year old. You are in the right place and in my experience not only were the staff super professional but very kid, which makes such a huge difference. I am sure you will find the same. Make sure you have support and access to some decent food. It can seem like an even longer night when you have low blood sugar.

My ds had sepsis 4 years ago and made a full recovery.

He went down hill in a matter of hours.
If your son is looking better with calpil hopefully that is a good sign.
Take comfort from the fact you are in hospital and they are being proactive.

I will keep you and your little one in my thoughts .

We've been there and it's very scary. We were lucky and still have DD but it was very touch and go. The important thing is you are in the right place and treatment is already happening which hopefully means a good recovery from here. I hope all is fine.

My DS had sespsis from gastroenteritis at the exact same age about 1.5 years ago. It’s scary & awful to see them going through it and I’m so sorry it’s happened to you & your little one.
My DS is now absolutely fine, no ongoing problems from it.
We had the exact same issue with feeding - he would feed well then calpol wore off and he got worse again, lasted for a few days. The docs told me as long as he’s keeping a little bit down that’s fine.
Im assuming you’re still in hospital? I’m sure the docs have got it under control and he’s in the best place.
Massive hugs - make sure you take care of yourself too while he’s poorly

Hand hold here, I can only imagine how you’re feeling. Had similar with dd2 the beginning of last year (11 months). I’d got an emergency gp appointment as she wasn’t herself, being sick, temperature wouldn’t come down even with Calpol. If gp couldn’t fit her in straight away I was going to call an ambulance, as it happens gp called an ambulance. I happened to see on gp’s computer it was query sepsis. Anyway, it turned out she had a severe double ear and throat infection but I was beside myself. The hospital were amazing and had us all sorted, your ds is in the best place. Agree with pp’s to look after yourself, we’re all rooting for a speedy recovery for your boy.

Thank you all. We're in hospital for a couple of days. He's still feeding which is a good sign andi managed to get a bit of rest. He had a mild temperature again last night.

I really hope he grows out of these utis. I cant have this every other month.

My partner visits every day.

He had an ultrasound 2 months ago and that came back OK but consultant wants to do another one. His kidneys were fine antenatally in scans.
