Preparing for a General Anaesthetic for tooth extraction

Probably a silly question. DS -9yo will soon be having 2 adult teeth extracted under GA. It’s a morning appointment so no food/ drink from midnight. I wondered if it is ok to brush his teeth in the morning prior to his appointment?. I’m a massive worrier so sorry if question seems daft. Thanks.

Yes, it's fine to brush his teeth. The no food or drink caution is in case the GA makes him nauseous. Most docs will allow a bit of water too.

Good luck to your DS. Smile

Thanks Miss. I thought it should be fine. My worrying is taking over though. 😩 Thanks again.

Kids heal fast at that age. Give him an age appropriate dose of ibuprofen for a few days and he'll be fine.

I had to have a tooth pulled in January and then another one six weeks later. I wish I had done them both under GA.

You can drink water until 2hrs beforehand. So if you have to leave home early offer some still water.

Good child focused leaflets available from Royal College of Anaesthetists and lots of hospitals have you tube videos to help kids prepare.
