Smelly ear?

Slightly revolting but just wondered if anyone had experienced similar.
DS1, aged 4 had ear ache one night, next day loads of yellow/green gunk coming out, ear ache gone. Went to Drs, antibiotics as leaking but no temp or anything. All fine.
Following week, leaking starts again but clear and smelly - bit like unwashed belly button, definitely not a good smell.
Back to Dr, they can't see anything as too much gunk but not looking infected. He had grommets fitted in Dec 16 - we know left one had fallen out but this is right ear. Referred back to ENT but it's a 15 week wait and can't cope with this smell that long!
Dr said to go back if concerned - feel like I'd like someone to have another look - or push for faster referral? His hearing is affected again and it impacts his behaviour as he can't hear well so is tired a frustrated.

Push for faster referral

On my dd I can tell when it is infected by the smell. Oral antibiotics rArely work and dds consultant prescribes eye drops to put into the ear as the only thing that works for her.

I always thought smelly gunk from ear indicates infection. The GP route at local A&E perhaps? Or can you call the team who put the grommets in and ask them what you should do?
