Daughters dental braces

Took dd to the orthodontist today, to be told (for the first time in 18 months of going) that because she has had 14 wires break over the course of her treatment, if she has another one break then they will remove them and stop treatment.
She’s eating the right things, breaking things into small pieces before chewing, has anyone else had this?

Wow, why was it such a long gap since the last orthodontist appointment? My two have had to have their braces adjusted every 6 weeks. The braces can't have been doing much good if 14 of the wires had broken!

we had it hapeened quite a bit at the beginning, but then I think they used thicker wires and it didn't happen again.

I think the wire thickness is to do with how much pressure they need to apply to the teeth to get them to move bluebell (or at least that is what the orthodontist technician told us).

Dd has had hers for over a year and no wires have ever broken. A bracket came off once but wires have been fine. Must be something else going on. Is she eating unsuitable foods in secret?

I think it depends on the orthodontist. My dd has never had her wires break and yet her friend's, at different ortho, are breaking all the time. She gets charged for the broken ones though, not treatment stopped. Is it possible to change orthodontists? 14 wires is a lot.

youre right MargoLovebutter, it was for the pressure.it got thicker at every appointment.

We were warned that is braces aren't taken care of then treatment will stop. Our area has a three strikes and you are out policy - so 14 wires would have been the end of it here. They should have been clearer at the beginning though - was it not in all the info when the braces were put on?

My DS stupidly had chewing gum at the very beginning (despite having the list), he broke a wire, we spoke to them, apologised, I got them to reiterate the 'no' list and the reasons why to him, got it fixed and it never happened again.

Is your daughter totally clear on the list of foods she can't have - chewing gum, sweets, popcorn, pizza crusts, nuts, ice, crisps etc & are you sure she isn't having any of the stuff she shouldn't - 14 wires is an awful lot to break?

My daughters orthodontist doesn’t charge for the 1st 3 repairs, then it’s something like £80 each time after. Can’t wait for them to be removed

Actually it was a bracket off not a wire - still the three strikes policy for any damage though.

Margolove sorry, I didn’t explain very well, she’s had braces for 18 months in total, not since the last appointment.
She’s corrected me, it’s not the wires, it’s the brackets that have broken. She said one day she was just walking from school and one fell out!

Only 1 bracket has ever come off for dd.

DD1 had one wire break. DD2 ha none break. Neither has had a bracket break though. How strange. I’d query how they are fitted - unless you suspect your DD might be doing something wrong.

She's not trying to eat apples or other hard things?

I haven’t seen her eat them, she turned down things ,like crunchies and popcorn because she’s not allowed them. I’m not sure what to think.

My DS had three brackets come off. Each time the orthodontist insisted he must have been eating something hard to have caused it. DS insisted he hadn't to me and knowing how conscientious he is, I believed him (wouldn't have believed his sister though!). Then, on yet another visit to get a bracket reaffixed, the orthodontist checked all the brackets, declared them all solidly attached, turned around for 30 seconds with DS still in the chair and another bracket popped off! The orthodontist laughingly admitted at this point that the enamel on some people's teeth (can't remember why - possibly if they have high levels of fluorine?) can affect the glue and mean that the brackets don't stick as well!

Same here, although the orthodontist didn't count the freak accident involving the cat getting it's claw caught in the wire!
