Swollen fingers - pic

DD (11) has swollen fingers - they've been like this for a while. At first I thought it was just the shape of her hands but I don't think it is - it seems to be getting a bit worse - you can see the worst bit on her little finger.

I'll take her to the GP but we won't get an appointment for four weeks Hmm so thought I'd ask here while we wait.

She is basically healthy but does have a tendency to UTIs and a tiny bit of kidney damage as a result but we keep on top of that. She had a kidney scan last year and kidney function was fine at that point so I'm assuming it's not that but obviously I need to get that checked.

Any thoughts?

Swollen fingers can be a sign of kidneys not working properly, my son suffers from CKD. As your DD has kidney issues I would insist on an emergency GP appointment.

oh dear - thanks for the heads up. I'll see what I can do re the GP.

Is your DD quite overweight? If not, I’d say her hands look significantly puffy, not just the fingers... what about round her eyes, is their also puffiness there?

Imo you should be asking for an emergency GP appointment as your DD has a previous history of kidney damage and has developed swollen fingers.

Any pain in them? Are they hot as well as swollen? Has she been unwell?

Backingvocals · 05/04/2018 20:44

She is a bit overweight but not much. Prob a few extra pounds on her belly but nothing elsewhere. If I posted a full length pic you probably wouldn't notice (apart from the extreme MN police end of the spectrum).

I see what you mean about her hands - now I look at the pic there are dents instead of knuckles in the main bit of her hand. She'd just come in from a whole day at multisports - outside the whole time so she was also cold and her hands were red anyway from the wind and running around with a hockey stick but I do agree that this looks not normal.

Sorry cross posting. No other puffiness that I can see. I'll have a look at her feet later. Fingers are not hot.

She's not been ill lately - she's had a good run. She takes d - mannose for the UTIs which seems to help (last bad one was last April and she was hospitalised for that but nothing since).

Yes, it was the indented knuckles I noticed- looks puffy round them. Hopefully you’ll be able to get a prompt appointment tomorrow and get everything checked out Smile

Taken her to see the dr who said she’s pretty sure it’s not kidneys. Blood pressure is fine. She’s having blood tests on Monday to make sure. Dr thinks it’s allergy but I’m not sure. Would that really give you swollen fingers for a month? She’s on piriton now so we’ll see.

no, allergies would (usually) give a localised reaction.
my first thought was inflammation, but that would be more around joints which is not the case for your dd.
good luck!

Backingvocals · 09/04/2018 15:34

Blood tests are back and the Dr says they are normal. She did haematology and biochemistry checks. The only ones that are out of whack are

RBC - 5.4 (4-5.2)
Eosinophils 1.18 (0.1-1.00 )
Creatinine 35 (46-70)

But the print out says that the reference ranges are for adults so these may not even be out at all for children and doctor thinks they are fine.

DD is on piriton now in case it's allergic but that's not doing anything (yet). We are due to go back tomorrow so I'll follow up then. Relieved it's not kidneys but something is still not right.

Are her fingers/joints tender? And the thumb on the left hand is in the hitchhikers position, is it normally like that?

Backingvocals · 09/04/2018 20:00

Her fingers and joints aren’t tender. The skin is a bit sensitive from being stretched but otherwise she is fine.

I think she was flexing her hand for the photo - thumb looks quite normal ordinarily I think ?
