Getting worried about dd - any ideas?

Dd is 2 3/4. She's been unwell since sat night, but if vomiting sat night and Sunday and worsening fever. Only started measuring it yesterday (digital ear thermom) but last night 2130 she hit 40.1 degrees. Basically forced some meds in her and it came down. This morning, 40.1 again. I cannot get Meds into her. She had maybe 2ml of nurofen in yogurt but has v little appetite.
Spoke to GP who wasn't too worried said sounds like virus. Asked about paracetamol suppositories and she said they should be available over the counter.

Midday today tried calpol but she choked then vomited back up as I was basically forcing it in. Temp is now 40.4.

I asked in one pharmacy about suppositories and they'd have to order jn.

Any ideas? She's my 3rd and I normally get on with it but the very high temp is worrying me and she's so listless/periodically distressed.
She is drinking and weeing fine but v little appetite.
No obvious sign of infection source and no other major symptoms.

Sorry to hear your daughter is unwell OP. I'd ring 111 as they may well get a doctor to call you back or advise you to go to A&E.

chandlersfraud · 06/04/2018 11:09

I've decided I will do A&E this eve if she is not better. Probably quicker than faffing about with 111

Has she had 24hrs of antibiotics already (3-4 doses?) if so and there is still no improvement I would just take to A&E this afternoon, no point in leaving it til evening time when ur dd will probably be tired and more cranky imo.

Redrosebelle · 06/04/2018 15:26

I agree avoid a&e after 5pm ish. Just go now if no improvement honestly. What’s her temp been like today?

catinapoolofsunshine · 06/04/2018 15:28

Go now chandlers not late on a Friday evening with all the drunks! Unless she's totally recovered after the antibiotics she's had so far obviously.

chandlersfraud · 06/04/2018 16:04

Temp hovering about 39.5 all day today (without any medicine) and she has not moved from lying on the sofa & is napping a lot but when awake is managing to be quite grumpy/demanding which is reassuring in a way!
Unfortunately with 2 older children going before dh comes home is not ideal and we are 30 mins from the nearest A&E.
I also want to see if her temp rises above 40 again tonight - she's had 3 doses of ABs so far.
If we do end up going was hoping to be spared the Friday night drunks if there's a separate child department.
I really appreciate all the advice, thank you.
If this is 'just' a virus it's a really really nasty one.

What time r u hoping to take her? I'd still go even if temp doesn't go above 40 if I'm honest with you.

BigBairyHollocks · 06/04/2018 20:42

Hi OP,how is she this evening?

chandlersfraud · 06/04/2018 21:22

I'd say she's better than this time yesterday. I'm going to get my bigger ones off to bed (yes they're still up as we've all been sleeping in with the disturbed nights!) then take her temp again and possibly go off down to the hospital if it rises again. Where I'm planning to go has a separate children's emergency dept so hopefully not too affected by Friday night shenanigans.

Good luck.

I'm wondering if your user name is an indication of location? (H county?)

If so I know one of the children's departments (Q) doesn't remain open 24 hours. I went at 6am with ds once when he cracked his head open and had to wait until 8 to be seen as children's a and e was shut until then.

chandlersfraud · 06/04/2018 21:48

Temp is on a downward trend at the monent (38.8 currrently, no meds) & she is sleeping peacefully at the moment so we will be staying put for now.

Thank you @youarenotkiddingme that might be where I was planning to go so that's useful to know (will have to research if there's anywhere else with a Q in the name in this county!) - my username is a very rough clue to location but also a bit of a red herring iyswim.

Hi op how was she overnight and this morning?

chandlersfraud · 07/04/2018 08:39

Hooray! We had a good night and this morning she is better! No fever and sitting feeding herself breakfast! So relieved, thank you for your support and advice. The results weren't back on fri but I will call on Monday to find out if it was a uti & antibiotics helped or if it just ran its course. Would be helpful to know for future.

Nogodsnomasters · 07/04/2018 09:24

Oh I'm so relieved for you op! I'm sure you are too, it's bloody awful when they're sick, it seems the antibiotics have done the job xx

catinapoolofsunshine · 09/04/2018 18:12

That's good news!

Did you ring for the results? If there was a UTI then its important to know, because if she gets a high temperature again within the next few weeks it's very likely to be back and needs to be cultured to find out exactly what it is and target it with the right antibiotics. DD got better and worse repeatedly, and the 3 days of antibiotics she was prescribed twice were only knocking it back, not clearing it, so it spread to her kidney.

Hope she's all clear and stays that way!

chandlersfraud · 13/04/2018 11:16

Have phoned the GP a few times this week but only got results today - it was in fact a UTI. I think I will write to the surgery as it should have been handled better and she should have been treated after my first visit on day 4.
Also when we did finally get ABs the practice nurse gave me the option and said it was my choice and they wouldn't normally treat before getting sample back (not what Nice guidelines say). If I had opted not to take ABs for dd then I'm sure she would have been very unwell (already 6 days of increasing temp by that point).
Now we will have to lay off potty training for a bit I think.
I'm glad I know for sure so I will know the signs if it happens again.

And I had really good advice on this thread so thank you again. It totally would have been right to go to A&E if she had not improved on that Friday.

Yeah I agree the treatment your daughter received was not good. I hope you do write and get a response.
