Recovery from knee injury

My ds had a bad accident at school leaving him with a large laceration on his knee. He needed an operation to wash it out, check for damage and close the wound.

He has anti biotics to take for a week and a knee splint to wear.

How long does it take for the knee to recover from this type of operation? Ds has been very brave but is feeling a bit down about it.

We will find out more next week at his check up. Just wondering if anyone on here has experience of this type of injury.

How old is he? If there’s no internal damage (ligaments, meniscus etc) it’s no different to getting a laceration anywhere else, apart from the fact that if it’s on a joint he won’t be able to bend it as that will stretch the sling and open the wound again, depending on how deep anything from 4-8 weeks I’d say

Skin not sling
I’ve only had deep lacerations before (sport etc) so may not be as long on your case

Thank you for your reply. He is 9. From what the surgeon said everything is ok with his knee, she just had to clean it up and close the wound. He has a big leg splint on to keep it straight. So what you say may be right that it will be a month or more until he can properly bend it.

It will be no bike riding and football for at least a month. He won't be happy.

I should have said, it is very deep. It looked so bad the school phoned an ambulance. I am still having nightmares about it. It was horrible to look at!
