Orthodontics/facial surgery?

Advice gratefully received!

DS1 is almost 10. We've been told by dentists since he was around 5 that he would need a referral to the orthodontist. I thought this was due to the gap between his front teeth and some crowded teeth. At his last routine dental check up the dentist decided she wanted to get this process started now and referred him. We have now seen the orthodontist and actually it's much worse than we thought. Along with the gap between his front teeth plus some upper and lower crowding he has an issue with his lower jaw protruding, essentially an underbite. She said this is fairly severe, he will need teeth removing and a fixed brace plus either surgery or an external brace. Its too big a problem for them to correct at this particular clinic so we've been referred to orthodontics and maxillofacial at the local hospital. They may start the process Now, or wait till after his growth spurt at 12. If they wait he might not need as much treatment but equally the problem may become worse as he grows and then it is more difficult to correct.

Does anyone have experience of this? What did you do? How did your DC cope with it?
