My 7 week old has a dimple at the bottom of his spine I remember it having to be checked before we could leave the hospital and was told it’s fine however I’ve read it can mean problems with the spine??

I have one, dd has one. Never caused us any problems. Hospital weren’t bothered. I did read to be aware that if potty training was a struggle to mention it as it could be a mild form of spina bifida which could cause bladder control issues.

In fact dd’s is spina bifida occulta....she has the red mark and hairy patch which are also signs. She wasn’t diagnosed as a baby, it was a doctor friend who saw it and said “you do know she has a mild form of spina bifida don’t you”. Which I didn’t.

DragonMamma · 22/03/2018 15:38

My mum and my DS have one and it’s caused neither any problems at all. DS is almost 7.

Oops4 · 22/03/2018 16:12

My dd had a very prominent one. They checked it was fully sealed as it can be a sign of a form of spina bifida but it was fine. She's nearly 5 and its stretching out as she grows

Notthisnotthat · 22/03/2018 18:46

I have one and so do my daughters, they were checked at birth and were fine, if I remember correctly they just stretched the dimple to make sure it flattened and you could see the bottom. My DB had spina bifida so my girls had a good check.

RatOnnaStick · 22/03/2018 18:48

I have one too and so does Ds1. He has a wonky bumcrack with it but after lots of checks as a baby it's all fine.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 22/03/2018 18:51

I have one too and so does one of my kids. All fine.

BendingSpoons · 22/03/2018 20:09

We were told it is ok if it is closed and also it's better if it's higher up. They are often fine. Presumably they would have said if there was a problem.

Kathjax · 22/03/2018 21:41

He was checked to make sure it was closed I’m just really scared as when I read on the nhs page it says if it is spinal bifida most baby’s have fluid on the brain

Kathjax please don't worry, if they had any concerns they would have done further checks in the hospital. As you can see from other posters, including myself, it's not uncommon and in most of the cases above was absolutely nothing to worry about.

Stay away from google, a level of heightened anxiety is not unusual after having a baby as the responsibility can be a bit overwhelming, but it can make you obsess over things and if you are really focusing on it do talk to your midwife or Dr for reassurance and don't just leave it an unspoken worry as they have a tendency to get magnified out of all proportion to reality (as I know only too well myself).

Thank you xx

My 5mo has one, it was picked up at the newborn check and they said it was nothing to worry about.

MadAssHatter · 24/03/2018 17:40

I have two and never had a problem in 32 years. Please try not to worry the hospital would have done more checks if they were concerned

Sosog00d · 24/03/2018 17:45

hi OP my DS (11) has it as does my brother and mother.

DB and DM are both dyspraxic but i don't think it correlates. My son is great - he has worn an orthopaedic insole for a couple of years and had physiotherapy. One leg was very slightly shorter than the other - its now corrected and hes a sporty little sod .... Cant conclusively say one way or another if the occulta had anything to do with it though.

speakfriendandenter · 24/03/2018 17:54

I'm sure we were told (with DD2's sacral dimple) that as it was sealed, it was fine. 2 drs checked her after birth and then we had to go back when she was still tiny to have a scan. It's never caused any issues.
Try not to worry that

iheartmichellemallon · 24/03/2018 18:05

My 2nd DS had one - id forgotten all about it until reading this thread actually. They checked his when he was born as they said it could indicate spina bifida but as it was sealed, there was nothing to worry about. I've not even looked at it since to see if there's still a dimple there (he's 9 now).
